One Night Only: Rifftrax Live Presents Starship Troopers

Starship Troopers

There is nothing I enjoy as much as an awful movie.  For full discretion, one of my top five favorite movies of… all… time… is Sylvester Stalone’s “Over The Top.”  There, I’ve said it, and I’m proud of it.  I enjoy it so much, expect for me to do some sort of opus on Funkhouser about the truck driving, arm wrestling, child custody motion picture.  Because I enjoy awful movies, I love Rifftrax.

The guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000, Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett (Crow T. Robot) and Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo), have gotten together and kept the MST3K tradition alive in lampooning movies with their company Rifftrax.  For those who don’t remember, Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988-1999) was about a janitor who worked for evil scientists who was launched into space to watch as many B-Movies as possible to see how many it would take to drive a person crazy.  The main character of the show, Joel Hodgson (and later Mike Nelson), and robots he made would sit and watch the films, while you heard them crack jokes throughout the entire movie. The Rifftrax model is to take current movies (as well as short films, commercials, and other B-Movies) and riff (of course) on them in downloadable MP3 files.  They have a simple, helpful system to time up the MP3 and the movie so that you can sit back and enjoy MST3K-style viewings in your own home.

On August 20, 2009, Rifftrax started going live with Fathom Events, allowing you to watch live broadcasts of the guys doing their thing in your local movie theater.  So far, they’ve done classics like Plan 9 From Outer Space, Reefer Madness, House on Haunted Hill, Jack the Giant Killer, Manos: The Hands of Fate, Birdemic and tonight, Starship Troopers. (Note: They originally ran a Kickstarter project to earn the rights to Twilight, but still couldn’t get the rights after raising $264,000).  On October 24th, they will also be doing their take on Night of the Living Dead.

Even if you’ve never seen Starship Troopers, I still highly recommend the experience.  If you were a fan of MST3K, and have nothing going on tonight, this is right up your alley. You’d be able to find me there if it was showing in any theater that was closer than two hours away.
