You know, Facebook is a funny thing sometimes. About 9 out of every 10 times you get on the social media platform, you are immersed in a bog of political diatribes, baby announcements and how to videos that teach you how to use crescent rolls in a new way to make an overly unappealing snack. And after every one of those 9 out of 10 times on Facebook, I say to myself: “I can’t, like… I just can’t be a part of Facebook anymore. I’m done with this.” BUT, it’s that 1 of every 10 visits where I realize why I got on Facebook in the first place in the summer of 2005, to reconnect with people I haven’t seen in a decade, and know that they’re doing really cool and interesting things.
It just so happened that I had one of those moments this week when someone I used to travel the globe with nearly 15-18 years ago (along with a 30-40 other aspiring athletes), had their new podcast pop-up on my Facebook feed. Tanner Griggs is based out of Texas and has released the first episode of his podcast “The Rattle Hour w/ Tanner Griggs” on Wednesday. The Rattle Hour is self described as “An Americana music podcast that provides insight and interviews with artists in the scene.” Tanner spends the first part of the podcast talking about the Americana artists who are trying to #ShakeThingsUp on the scene, followed by a countdown of the top albums of 2015, then an interview with musician Jon Young (who is not to be confused with a white rapper with the same name). You can check out Episode 1 below.
While listening to the podcast, I heard so many snippets of music that sounded like what I enjoy listening to, that I made a Spotify playlist from all the music. All in all, it is composed of 41 songs with a play time of just over two and a half hours. I highly recommend you take a listen to all of the amazing music in the playlist that has come out of the Americana scene, especially songs from artists and bands like Humming House, Zac Wilkerson, William Clark Green and more. There are also familiar names like Robert Earl Keen, Alabama Shakes, Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves and Chris Stapleton, among others.
I will have an interview with Tanner in the upcoming weeks, but for now enjoy the playlist of hand selected music by Griggs, and subscribe to his podcast on iTunes. You won’t be disappointed.
