With Netflix’s semi-unofficial-Mr.-Show reboot premiering in a couple of weeks, the network has leaked its first sketch of the reunited cast. Called “Resolutions,” it’s in pretty fine form as far as the Mr. Show sketch formula goes, and there’s cause for excitement.
How much excitement? Splitsider’s John Wenzel warns to temper things and remember the context — reminding yourself that the Mr. Show template has been emulated so often in the past twenty years that it might render the real thing looking also-ran. As he puts it:
“…Bob and David maintained a rigorous approach to vetting ideas, attempting to root out anything predictable or unintentionally groan-inducing. Their disregard for convention was institutional. Their vicious senses of humor were intoxicating and genuine.”
That sense of humor will do doubt still be on display (as almost everything they’ve done individually since has signified that they’re still the same comics at heart) but with a glut of viral, sketchy comedy available at the push of a button — comedy that Bob and David forebore, in many cases — it’s important to remember that you’re watching the old guard at work.
W/ Bob and David premieres on Netflix November 13.
