Five Movies to See This Holiday Season

We are a little over a week away from Thanksgiving and the official start of the Holiday Season.  During this time a lot of people find themselves off from work for vacation days or holiday closings which makes this time of year a great time for movie releases.  This is also the time when early Oscar campaigns pick up steam so a lot of the movies released are ones with aspirations of hoisting the golden statue.  Because there are so many movies on the horizon I wanted you to be armed with the must-see movies releasing between now and the end of the year.  Here are the top five movies you should consider when planning your holiday theater trip:

5) Allied Release: November 23, 2016

Allied, or the movie which allegedly broke up Brangelina, looks really good.  Brad Pitt plays a World War II intelligence officer romantically involved with a French Resistance fighter (Marion Cotillard).  During the war, the British government suspects she is a Nazi spy and it is up to Pitt to prove her innocence…or confirm her guilt.  This movie looks intriguing and features two solid leads directed by Robert Zemeckis.  Romance, suspense, and action make this movie a go-to for any movie-going excursion.

4) Moana Release: November 23, 2016

I initially put Moana on the list because I wanted to include something family friendly.  Between the trailers and finding out all the people involved with the movie, I kind of want to see it for myself.  The latest Disney animated feature is about a girl who has to save her people from a monster.  She enlists the help of a demigod named Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) and they go on an epic quest to confront the monster.  Early reviews give Moana a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so it looks like it will follow the same route of previous Disney movies Zootopia and Frozen.  This means kids will love it and some adults will too.  It also means you need to see it within the first couple of weeks it comes out before you’re inundated with songs (from Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame) and merchandise.

3) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Release: November 17, 2016

I am a big Harry Potter fan so the return to the wizarding world is something I am really excited about.  Fantastic Beasts is a distant prequel to the original story, taking place years before Voldemort rises to power so while you can expect some character crossover in this movie, it won’t directly link to those events.  On its own, though, Fantastic Beasts looks like it can carve out its niche among movie fans.  The wizarding world comes to the U.S. as a horde of magical creatures goes on the loose in New York City and it’s up to Newt Scamander to round them up.  There are a ton of things to be excited about for existing Harry Potter fans, but what will attract others is what looks like amazing special effects along with a solid cast and crew.  Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, Colin Farrell, and director David Yates (Deathly Hallows) are a great foundation to start the next franchise within J.K. Rowling’s world.

2) Passengers Release: December 21, 2016

A movie featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt has to be considered based on the attractiveness level alone.  Both Lawrence and Pratt have proven to be big screen stars and Passengers will rely heavily on their ability since pretty much the whole movie is just those two.  The two stars are passengers Jim and Aurora, who are on a spaceship where everybody exists in suspended animation for the duration of the journey.  For some reason, these two wake up early (90 years early) and are left to their own devices until they find out that the ship is in danger and the lives of everybody on board rest in their hands.  There are elements of mystery, sci-fi, romance, humor, and drama which can make a movie really good…or really formulaic.  I suspect Passengers will be the former and definitely look forward to watching it.

1)Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Release: December 16, 2016

Coming off a rousing return to theaters last December, the Disney-led Star Wars franchise is starting to run at a full sprint.  Rogue One is the first in what will be many ancillary stories while the main saga continues.  This is something Disney has a really solid history doing (read: Marvel movies) so the precedence is there for this to be a great movie.  Rogue One tells the story of the Rebel Alliance’s attempts to uncover information which could lead to the destruction of the Death Star.  This movie will give a glimpse at the rebellion pre-Luke Skywalker and uncover the “great cost” at which those plans were obtained.  There appears to be a host of new characters introduced in the movie as well as looks at younger versions of many we already know.  Rogue One has a real Empire Strikes Back feel from the trailers and just having a vague idea what happens from Episode IV.  The movie looks great and if we’re lucky we will see Darth Vader go HAM on the rebels.
