Women’s Volleyball wins SEC opener; faces Alabama tonight

(H/t Regina Rickert)

The UK Women’s Volleyball team is 1 for 1 so far on its weekend trip down south. The girls swept Auburn Friday, 3-0, and face Alabama this afternoon at 2:30.

Vs. Auburn

The Cats showed amazing defense against Auburn. They won the match 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) in a sweep against a team that had only lost 3 matches. Kentucky racked up 60 digs, which was a Skinner-era high for only three sets. The team also had 12.5 blocks holding Auburn to only 29 kills on a .102 hitting percentage.

Senior Whitney Billings led the offense with a match high 17 kills on a .312 hitting clip. She also had 14 digs and four block assists. Sophomore Selby Workman totaled eight kills, 10 digs and a pair of aces. Senior Zan Morgan logged nine blocks, her best this season. Jackie Napper led three players in double-figures with an impressive 16 digs

Just because this weekend’s matches are far away doesn’t mean team mascot, Marcus Lee, isn’t playing attention.

And according to the team’s assistant coach, a few hundred miles wasn’t going to keep the girls from watching some football.

Good thing they had a long ride ahead of them.

Getting to know Alabama

Alabama has a 12-2 record through their non-conference season. The Crimson Tide has not lost a match at home. Their two losses come from early in the season against Washington State and Houston Baptist. Alabama is led by Ed Allen, who is in his third season.

At Alabama, Kentucky needs to watch out for the young ones on the opposing team. Redshirt freshman Krystal Rivers is currently the SEC Freshman of the Week, and leads the team with 179 kills, including a 3.51 kills per set average and a .452 hitting clip. She also has a team-high tying 40 blocks. Sophomore Sierra Wilson has racked up 580 assists who ranks second in the SEC.

The match is at 2:30 and you can follow it on The girls will return home next week to play matches against Ole Miss and Tennessee.
