(h/t: Regina Rickert)

The UK Women’s Volleyball team got their first win tonight after dominating Long Beach State University in three sets. The Cats won 3-0.

Here are the stats from the Cats in the game:

Set 1: 25-17

16 kills, 4 errors, 28 attacks, and a .429 hit percentage.

At one point the Cats took a timeout trailing 10-6 after a 6-1 run by the 49ers. However, Billings ignited a Wildcat 8-1 run giving the Cats a 14-11 lead and then a victory.

Set 2: 27-25

20 kills, 8 errors, 47 attacks, and a .255 hit percentage.

The second set went back and forth until LBSU was leading 24-23. Workman came out with a cross-court shot forcing LBSU into a miscue, which gave UK the lead, and eventually the set win.

Set 3: 25-15

17 kills, 2 errors, 30 attacks, and an amazing .500 hit percentage.

In this set, UK opened a quick 2-0 lead, then went on a 4-1 after it was tied at 3. The Cats then went on to extend their lead extensively to 18-8. LBSU would never make the much needed comeback.

Kentucky had three top performers today, including Alexandra Morgan, Whitney Billings, and Shelby Workman.

Morgan had 11 kills, a .647 hit percentage, 1 assist, 1 dig, and two blocks.

Shelby Workman had 13 kills, a .375 hit percentage .375, 1 assist, 4 digs, and 1 block.

Once again the most impressive player was the newest member of the 1000-kills club, Whitney Billings. Billings had 13 kills, a .348 hitting percentage, 1 assist, 1 ace, and 10 digs. This was Billings third double-double in a row.

Morgan Bergren and Billings made the Mizuno Invitational All-Tournament Team.

UK Athletics quoted Skinner as saying “This tournament featured four very good teams who are all capable of winning big matches this season. I think all of the teams will really benefit from this weekend as the season progresses.”

The ladies are already on their way home back to Lexington. Even though they started the season 1-2, it seems the win against Long Beach State University has helped put pep back in their step.
