UK Volleyball has had a nice break since they last played. Their last contest was last Saturday when the Cats upset #4 Minnesota, 3-2, in Lexington. It was the biggest upset against a ranked team in the Skinner era and the largest for the program in general since 1993.
The Cats did not gain any spots in the national rankings due to a loss to Pepperdine earlier in the season; however Minnesota did fall to #9.
After a slow week the #19 University of Kentucky volleyball team heads to Nashville for a match against Lipscomb on Saturday. It will be just the second time the two schools have met. The match will air live on ESPN3 at 3 p.m. .
This is only the second time this season the Cats have traveled for a match. Kentucky is 6-3 on the season so far and this is the second to last non-conference match before the Cats start SEC play.
Thanks to great performances last week against Louisville and Minnesota, this week Kentucky was given two SEC weekly honors. Senior right side hitter, Whitney Billings, was awarded SEC Player of the Week and Freshman Anni Thomasson earned Freshman of the Week.
Lipscomb is 7-3 on the season after starting the season with three straight tournaments. In fact, Lipscomb has only lost 2 sets the entire season. Even though Lipcomb’s record looks good, their schedule hasn’t been nearly as tough as Kentucky’s. But, of course the match shouldn’t be taken lightly by the Cats.
The Cats need to watch out for Jewell Dobson who leads Lipscomb with 158 kills and 19 blocks on the season and a team high .419 hitting percentage.
Make sure to watch the match and support the Cats tomorrow. They need all the support they can get as they prepare to start conference play in the upcoming week.
