Volleyball defeats Crimson Tide; Continue winning streak

After dropping their first set, UK Women’s Volleyball rallied back to beat Alabama and to win its fifth straight match. The Cats beat the Crimson Tide 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23) in front of 1,281 fans in Tuscaloosa.

Set Break Down

Set 1: UK fell 25-15 after falling behind 19-13. Morgan Bergren had 3 kills and 7 assists, but her effort was enough to give the cats the set.

Set 2: In the start of the second set the Cats fell behind 11-8, however they scored 7 straight points to lead 15-11. Schwarzwalder had a final kill giving UK the game point and Cats won 25-19.

Set 3: In the third set Alabama answered back with 6 straight points to take a 11-7 lead. However UK scored 4 straight to tie it at 11. The score was tied again at 15. Then the Cats went on to score 6 of the last 7 points to take a 21-16 lead. From there the cats took off to win the set 25-19

Set 4: In set 4 UK led throughout thanks to Billings 11 kills, 8 digs and 5 blocks and Burgren’s career-high-tying 8 kills and 32 assists. Even though the Cats led, it was still close, and they only won with a narrow score of 25-23.


Senior Whitney Billings racked up a match-high 14 kills on .448 hitting clip and also led the team with six blocks and eight digs. Alexandra Morgan added eight kills on a .528 hitting clip and also had six block assists.

Coach Skinner couldn’t have been happier with the way his girls played.

I’m really proud of our mental toughness and effort after set one,” UK coach Craig Skinner said. “Alabama is a very good team; and two of our seniors stepped up for us when we needed them the most on the road, Zan in the second set and Whitney in the last two.”


With this victory, Kentucky moves to 10-3 on the season, including a 2-0 start to the SEC action. UK will return home this Friday to take on Ole Miss for the SEC home opener.
