#21 UK Volleyball won all three of its matches over the weekend, to win the Kentucky Classic for the seventh time in eight years. The Wildcats are now 4-2 on the season.
The closest game Kentucky played in the Classic was against VCU, which went into five sets, and Kentucky was victorious (24-26, 25-15, 20-25, 25-19, 15-12). The Wildcats were behind 1-0 and then 2-1 in the sets before winning the final two frames. They captured the win in front of 1,500 fans at their home opener and handed VCU its first loss of the season. VCU is now 4-1 on the season.
In the match against Liberty freshman Anni Thomasson led the team to a sweep, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, and 25-20). All three of the sets started as back and forth, but UK managed to pull ahead all three times. Thomasson had the best match of her young career with 12 kills and 13 digs. Junior Jackie Napper also contributed a game high 16 digs. VCU fell to 1-6 on the season.
In the final match against ETSU the Cats swept again, 3-0 (21- 25, 15-25, 20-25). The opening set was the closest of the match. There were five lead changes and 14 ties. The Cats did not take the lead until it was tied at 20. In the second set, the Cats “ran off” with a 14-3 run that could not be made up by ETSU. In the final set, UK went on another 7-2 run to make it a 17-11 set, and they would go on to win it. ETSU falls to 3-4 on the season.
Jackie Napper was named Kentucky Classic MVP due to her amazing performance. Sophomore Morgan Bergren and freshman Anni Thomasson were named to the All-Tournament team.
According to UKAtheltics.com, Coach Skinner is still not happy with the lineup and is still trying to figure out what works best for the team. He went on to say that he thinks that the team isn’t showing what a great blocking team they are.
While the girls posted their happiness with their performance all over social media, there seems to be something else on their mind.
