On Sunday, the UK softball team traveled to Columbus, Ohio to play a doubleheader against Ohio State University. With great pitching from senior Lauren Cumbess and freshman Meagan Prince, the Cats claimed game one 6-1. The two of them combined to throw a shutout, allowing only two hits and five strikeouts as Cumbess pitched the first four innings before allowing Prince to take over. The UK offense produced all the run support needed when sophomore third baseman Nikki Sagermann started it off in the 4th with a solo homerun over the left field wall. More run support was provided when sophomore pitcher, Kelsey Nunley, delivered a base clearing double. This was followed by a double by sophomore outfielder Darington Richardson, who eventually scored on an OSU error to seal the 6-0 victory.
In the second game, Sagermann once again displayed her strength, as she hit another solo homerun to start the scoring for the Cats. However, OSU answered with six runs in the first two innings to take the lead over the Cats 6-1. The Cats responded with 5 more runs. The score favored the Buckeyes 6-5 until sophomore infielder Christian Stokes blasted a solo homerun to tie the game. The score remained 6-6 for six more innings, until the Buckeyes came out on top in the 12th, claiming the extra-inning win against the Cats.
The softball team will continue its fall schedule this weekend, traveling to Dayton, Ohio to take on Wright State at 2 pm and Dayton at 4 pm. The fall schedule will conclude on October 6th at John Cropp Stadium where the Cats will take on Georgetown College for a doubleheader starting at noon.
