UK softball defeated Louisville 7-3 in extra innings today. This is the second time the Cats have defeated the Cards this season. Meagan Prince started on the mound for that Cats, who was 8-3 on the season with a 3.61 ERA prior to the win. The Cards went up early on the Cats in the first inning with a leadoff homerun from Jones. The Cats quickly took the lead in the second after Lauren Cumbess led off with a single and Christian Stokes blasted a two run homerun over the centerfield wall, recording her fifth homerun of the season. Maisie Steed followed Stokes’ homerun with one of her own, putting the Cats up 3-1 in the second inning. Kelsey Nunley replaced Meagan Prince after three innings on the mound. Kelsey Nunley successfully held the Cards to one run entering the bottom of the seventh inning, however UL’s Jones hit her second solo homerun of the game, which cut the UK lead 3-2. UL tied the game 3-3 after another solo homerun, this one by Duncan, forcing the game into extra innings. The Cats went on to take the lead in the 8th after an RBI slap bunt by Samuel, followed by a two-run double by Sagermann and a RBI groundout by Gaines which put the Cats up 7-3. The Cats held UL’s offense in the bottom of the 8th inning to defeat the Cards for the second time this year.
The Cats will now Travel to Athens, Georgia to take on Georgia in a three-day three-game SEC series starting on Friday. Game two of the series will begin Saturday at 4:00pm followed by a 1:30pm start on Sunday. The Cats are now 41-11 overall and 13-8 in conference play. The win over the Cards ties UK’s most wins in a season with 41 wins.
