The Wildcats exciting SEC run continues as they defeated No. 6 LSU in extra innings to advance to the SEC Championship today. The Cats went with the same lineup as the previous two games in the tournament with Kelsey Nunley on the mound. Nunley had two 1-2-3 innings before the Cats loaded the bases in the third, scoring a run on a RBI single by Griffin Joiner. Krystal Smith followed with a single up the middle that scored Lauren Cumbess to take the lead 2-0 in the third inning. The Tigers cut the lead after a leadoff triple, a walk and then an error that allowed the runner at third to score.
The Cats entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a one run lead before the Tigers tied the game. Nunley hit the leadoff batter and a sacrifice bunt moved the runner all the way to third with no one covering for UK. The runner at third then scored on a slap hit before Nunley could get out of the inning and the Tigers sent the game into extra innings. LSU’s pitcher Corbello had a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th, which retired her 14th straight batter in a row. In the top of the ninth inning, LSU walked Carroll, Christian Stokes reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Sylver Samuel followed up with a two-out two-on double to left centerfield that helped lead the Cats to the extra inning win against No. 6 LSU. The Cats have advanced to the SEC Championship game for the first time in program history, which will be played Saturday evening where they will take on winner of Alabama and Georgia at 8:00 p.m ET.
