If you didn’t head to Nashville for the big game and you don’t have ESPN News, you should head over to UKAthletics.com to watch Women’s Volleyball at 7:30 .
The Women are facing Illinois in their season’s second game in the Mizuno Invitational. Last night the Cats lost a frustrating match to Florida State, 3-0. After falling behind the in match early the girls could not retake the lead.
In 2012, the Fighting Illini went 14-16 and finished eighth overall in the Big Ten standings. You would think this match would be a piece of cake, however that is not the case.
In 2012 Illinois had 15 matches against ranked opponents and five against teams who would go on to the Final Four. In fact they BEAT the reigning National Champions, Texas, 3-2. Scary right? While Illinois wasn’t ranked in the preseason poll, they still received several votes and should eventually make their way up into the top 25.
On Friday, Illinois beat FSU 3-0
Lets learn a bit of history now. In 1988 Canada hosted the winter Olympics, NASA resumed its space shuttle flights and UK and Illinois had their last Volleyball meeting. During this year, UK was ranked 9th in the country and Illinois was ranked 5th. Illinois went on to win the National Title in Volleyball that year.
It seems like the two schools had a healthy series back in the day, and it should be interesting to see it be renewed a long 25 years later.
You can keep track of the match on UKAthletics.com.
The site of the invitational is at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California. It opened in 1994 and has played host to many of the University’s teams. It is a very unique arena and probably one of the most beautiful I have seen. Take a look for yourself.
Here are the girl’s taking a team photo in front of it:
