Willie Cauley-Stein is back on the market. HoopsHype is reporting that the former Cat has turned down his $2.28 million player option with the Dallas Mavericks and is now an unrestricted free agent.

Cauley-Stein was traded to the Mavericks from Golden State back in January. He struggled to find his groove in Dallas, averaging only 5.2 points and 4.6 rebounds in 12.1 minutes per game, but spent the offseason retooling his game and has looked impressive in recent workouts:

The guy who’s missed the rim from within two feet in UK history. Thankfully he was using up valuable minutes in 2013-2014 which allowed us to get to the national title game.

Yeah WCS really sucked. He sucked so bad he was the 2015 National Defensive POY on a team that went 38-1. He was not good in the Wisconsin game but come on man.

This sort of reminds me of the nerlens situation, hope this doesn’t end for WCS like it did for Nerlens. That’s a lot of money to leave in the table and bet on yourself when you’re a player of Willie’s level. I love WCS tons, just not sure he’s good enough to pull this off.

Nerlens turned down $17.5 million and had the potential for a very large max contract and walked away from all of that when he was still establishing himself in the league. I think Willie is in a different situation and will be fine.

Hope you’re right. Willie kind of fell off from what he established himself to be this season though.
