This afternoon, the Minnesota Timberwolves announced the tragic passing of Jacqueline Cruz, mother of former Kentucky star Karl-Anthony Towns.

In the hours since news broke of Cruz’s death, fans, media members, teammates, and coaches have all publicly reached out to the former Wildcat big man to express their heartfelt condolences after hearing of the devastating news.

In the process, an old video of Towns’ commitment to Kentucky with his mother by his side has come to light, and it’s something the Big Blue Nation has to see.

After announcing he would be reclassifying to the class of 2014 and committing to the University of Kentucky, Cruz is seen clapping and cheering on her son before reaching in to give him a hug.

“Thank you, son! Thank you!” she said.

If I cry today, you guys have to cry, too.

A video of an emotional Towns learning he had become an NBA All-Star for the first time, along with his mother being the first person to hug him upon hearing the news, also resurfaced.

Towns’ birthday message for his mother back in 2016 is also certain to pull at your heartstrings.

“I want to take this time to wish the most special and important woman in my life an amazing birthday today,” he said. “You have always been the rock of our family and your strength and love has pushed me to not only be the best basketball player I could be, but be the best man I could be. I remember the times you used to come sleep with me when I was in Pre-K so I could sleep well in school or all the times you would sneak me out of school during my lunch and take me to Pizza Hut so we can eat that Buffett for lunch. I just want you to know I appreciate you tremendously and that with every step I take, I hope I am making you proud because I have never been prouder of anything in my life then to say your my mother. I love you.”

Back in 2015, ESPN also published a short feature on Towns and how his parents – specifically Ms. Jackie – helped pave the path of high character, selflessness, and success for the Timberwolves star.

Prayers to the Towns family during this heartbreaking time.

Jack buddy, don’t worry my friend because you’re not alone. I have actually cried big ol tears when I read that mother’s birthday note to her from Karl. God love his heart and I’ll be praying for their family and friends! I’m so very sad for Karl and while I don’t know what he’s going through, my heart just breaks into for that kid.

I’m so sorry that this has happened and I pray that they can find some peace knowing she loved them more than everything in the world. I don’t have the right words, but just know we all love you Kat and we’ll always be here for you if there’s anything we can do to help you. Be strong for your Dad and you guys can keep her memories with you forever.
