Tyler Herro claps back at Paul Pierce for saying he doesn’t deserve “Bucket” nickname

Paul Pierce is known for many good things over the course of his 19-year career in the NBA, earning ten All-Star appearances and winning a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008.

Following his playing career, though, Pierce has become known for horrible takes as a member of the media.

That streak continued recently when the former Celtic said Tyler Herro didn’t deserve the nickname “Bucket” quite yet, noting that he needs to average “at least 20” before he can earn nicknames.

“He’s got a nice IQ and an array of moves, but I can’t call nobody a ‘bucket’ if you ain’t averaging at least 20 for the course of an NBA season,” Pierce said. “If you average 11, I can’t give you, “I’m a bucket.” You know what I’m saying? I can’t give you, “I’m a bucket” because you get a couple buckets on the big stage.”

After knocking off the Celtics in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals and earning a spot in the NBA Finals, the former Kentucky star clapped back at Pierce in an interview on the Dan Le Batard Show.

“I averaged more than 11, first of all,” said Herro. “And I think I just averaged about 20 in the Eastern Conference finals.”

To be exact, Herro averaged 19.2 points per contest to go with 6.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists while shooting 52.3 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from three, easily one of the Heat’s best players in the series.

His biggest performance came in Game 4 when the former Wildcat finished with 37 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win.

Now, Herro and the Heat are set to take on the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals, which begin Wednesday evening.

Good try, Mr. Pierce. “The Bucket” is, in fact, a bucket.

With Paul Pierce’s comment, “The Truth” became a liar. And Herro is a bucket.

Part of Herro’s game is having confidence greater than his accomplishments. Served him well so far and what do you expect from a KU alum?

Seems pretty obvious. PP is a former Celtic whose team just lost to a Heat team that most everyone assumed Celts would win series. Our guy TH, “Bucket”, was a major contributor and PP is apparently a little disappointed. Boo Hoo. Many retired players mostly critical of today’s NBA game anyway. Perhaps current Celts players and coach Brad Stevens might disagree with PP on this one. Bucket made shots from all over the floor. Sounds like PP didn’t watch all of the games….

Who gives a ish. Shut your mouth and let your game do the talking young man. Why does everyone care what these overpaid mouth pieces, celebs and athletes the like, have to say? Responding to him shows your immaturity. You’ll learn one day, hopefully that Paul Pierce and Queen James opinions don’t matter to most.

Some clearly didn’t understand what this article is about. He was a guest on the Dan Le Batard Show. I would argue that Le Batard’s show would be better if Le Batard would just shut up, but it’s a talk show and that’s kind of what you’re expected to do: talk. Lighten up, people!

This is clearly political. You don’t have to listen to them but it is a free country and they’re allowed to voice their opinions just like you. Although now that I think about it I’ve noticed most people complaining are the Trump supporters who forget he’s a celebrity. I’m not supporting either side with this comment, I’m just stating what should be obvious.

Herro should have a great career. Those who aren’t laughing at Paul’s comments now, will likely be down the road.

Lmfao!!! Chill, he’s just a kid. You’re telling me if you’re old couch fat a$$ was as good as Herro at 20 you ain’t taking the check? My god, and don’t tell me you didn’t talk ish IF you played any sports, organizational or not.

Herro is a kid and he’s taking what their given from the hours that he put in. And instead of your aging wife, he’s tapping Katya! Go on Herro, the confidence you have had you in the finals on a team that plays the game unselfishly.

Not sure that being a “bucket” has anything to do with how many points you average. I think it refers to getting a big bucket when needed. I haven’t watched any NBA so I don’t know if he has enough crucial “buckets” to deserve the nickname. The fact that he thinks he is a bucket says a lot for his confidence. Just play the game, and if warranted, the nickname will stick.

Correct, Roger; and, yes, I’ve watched all the Heat games thus far, and he made many clutch buckets at crucial times.

It could also refer to how many spots he can hit it from, there’s a lot.

Davis is right there with him, if they double one the other will kill them, if they get forced to play to much “help” defense on both that leaves other guys wide open and they both can pass.

Paul Pierce, imo was the most overrated flopper who ever flopped in the NBA. Who cares what he thinks..

Hey Paul, he’s just 20 years old and in his first season in the NBA and has a team in the NBA Finals that wasn’t supposed to get to the conference finals. He is a MAJOR player on this self-less team and DOES get buckets from a variety of spots on the court. He’s not just a shooter, he’s a SCORER who is quick enough to drive past his opponent and score at the rim. Paul, he’s NOT OLD and reliant on old man tricks like post-up moves (pound ball and back opponent down) and fade aways— that’s for older players who’ve lost their step and ability to drive past an opponent or shoot over them…

Isn’t it true that Tyler’s nickname came while playing at UK, not in the NBA ?? Soooooo , what’s the controversy ?

    • runningunnin.454

Bingo! Pierce is probably just hearing it now. I think a guy was trash talking before crucial free throws in a UK game, and Tyler told him, “I’m a Bucket”.

Tyler recently made the same comment in a similar situation during the playoffs, so they’re talking about it.

What was Herro suppose to do ? Say “no comment ?” People do not have you on their TALK show to sit there and duck questions and no comment every question. How about this, maybe Paul Pierce should not come at someone and then expect him not to respond. Not like he was being degrading to Pierce, he just simply answered the question with facts, not like he lied or made something up. Way to go Tyler, remember, people have been doubting him his whole career, nothing new to him, he enjoys the banter. I am sure he enjoys proving the doubters wrong and quite frankly, is a little tired of it. Keep balling out young fella and shut the naysayers up.

I personally am skeptical that Herro would be performing like this is he was playing in front of hostile playoff crowds. The bubble has been a benefit for him, IMO, and I’m surprised no one mentions this. So, in some ways I agree with Pierce.

Except that he demonstrated all last season at UK that he actually steps it up a notch when facing a hostile road crowd. I don’t follow your logic at all.
