Turkey basketball ditches Enes Kanter over “political reasons”

enescalipari

Enes Kanter will not be a member of the Turkey national basketball team at the 2015 European Basketball Championships in September. The country’s star player has been excluded due to “political reasons.”

We don’t know what that means, but Kanter told Today’s Zaman, “The reason why I was excluded from the national team is my values and political views.”

Fans have started a hashtag in support of Kanter. You can join in on the movement by tweeting #EnesKanterMilliForma.

It’s #FreeEnes all over again.

He explains everything on his Fezbook page, but my Turkish is little rusty

Enes is probably too moderate for the Islamic Turkey.

On the contrary, the imam Kanter is linked to, while no extremist, is more conservative than the secular Turkish government. He has advocated a ‘return to democracy’ which, in that part of the world, usually equates to Islamism.

Not to make too fine a point of it, but Islamism is, by definition, inherently extremist since it calls for government by religious fiat and sharia law. By Islamist standards, Enes probably should be punished, for his wrestling idolatry alone. And Turkey is currently moving very quickly in the Islamist direction, unfortunately.

Not sure how a country can be moving very quickly in the Islamist direction and also be in reconciliation talks with Israel. Turkey is actually the closest thing to America there is in the Middle East. Turkey has been in lock step with America on Terrorism.

I test drove a Fiat once. Not roomy enough for a couple kids.

Why does controversy seem to follow Enes wherever he goes? There is a part of me that is glad he didn’t play for the Cats.
