Trey Lyles Stars in Debut

trey-cleveland

Two days after signing his contract, Trey Lyles showed why Jazz fans were excited for him to fall to them at No. 12 in the NBA Draft. In the Utah Summer League, Lyles helped the Jazz move to 3-0 with an 84-78 overtime win against the 76ers.

Lyles came off the bench to play over 20 minutes putting up 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. He impressed a couple Utah beat writers immediately though, with Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey saying “the eye test looks like Lyles is the best player on the court.” Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune tweeted “Trey Lyles is wreaking havoc on the Philly bigs with his versatility.”

Lyles jumper was off to start the game, but was missing long, which is a good sign for a shooter. As we saw last season he is a versatile power forward, who can easily shoot the three and beat a slower defender off the dribble. He should be a steal for the Jazz at the No. 12 pick, when he was likely a preseason top-5 pick if he returned for his sophomore season.

Best of luck to Trey during the rest of summer league, as this is a great showing for his first game.

I was at the game tonight. His outside shot was off, but the stroke looked good. His mid range was working well, and he finished a few good plays around the rim through contact. He had a nice and one against Okafor, but they waved it off and called a travel. They showed a replay on the screen and it was definitely NOT a travel. The entire crowd (including myself) booed very loudly.

Lyles definitely got the biggest cheers out of any players from the crowd, so that was nice to see/hear.

I was wearing my Big Blue gear at the game, and I wasn’t the only one.

i watched a good portion of the game and thought he looked pretty good as long as he wasn’t shooting too far out … 18 ft out looked good, a little further and out to the 3 point line was fuzzy

i think if he’ll put in the work to get a little stronger and in better shape, he’ll be a starter for a long time

now that he is in the nba and doesn’t have to compete with so many stars for playing time we should see a lot more from him.
