The Curious Case of Enes Kanter takes a Dark Turn

Getty

Enes Kanter’s opposition to the Turkish government has caused him many problems and created many headlines.Kanter weathered the initial storm, evading deportation in Romania after Turkey canceled his passport, only to return to America where he’s continued to spread his message.

Now that message against President Erdogan, who Kanter so lovingly refers to as the “Hitler of our century,” has put his family in danger.  Kanter says his father has been arrested by Turkish authorities.

Kanter’s father Mehmet has been stuck between a rock and a hard place.  Last August Mehmet publicly disowned his son for his political beliefs.

“I warned Enes before but he didn’t stop writing tweets against our president and the Turkish nation. As the Kanter family, we didn’t support his disrespectful sayings. Me and the Kanter family are disowning Enes. We want him to change his surname immediately. We want to say sorry to our president and to the Turkish nation for having a son like that.”

It seemed strange at the time, but now it’s apparent that Mehmet’s message more than likely was forced from the Turkish government.  It was not enough to keep him from being imprisoned.

Kanter’s conflict with his home country’s government has been ugly.  Let’s hope it gets better before it gets worse.

    Enes is a selfish punk.

There is nothing selfish about standing up for your beliefs. Probably not the way I would go about it but I would never call him selfish for this.

Um, what? Are you blaming the guy who is trying to stand up for millions of people, instead of the evil dictator?

Wrong. Erdogan is an evil authoritarian dictator who imprisons or kills anyone who opposes him.

Enes is foolish for continuing to poke the bear when it can still lash out at his family back in Turkey, but I wouldn’t say he is selfish.

Sad. We should thank God every day that we were born and live in the USA.

But perhaps he should hold his tongue until his family can get out.

Maybe he thinks knowing the world is watching will keep Erdogan from making his father disappear.

The world watching will not stop Erdogan from purging the people he finds undesirable. Kanter’s father is not a US citizen. He won’t be looked at much differently by world leaders than the other politcal prisoners after the failed coup.

To keep quiet in the face of tyranny is to be complicit. Turkish ex-pats must be vocal and bring attention to the atrocities if things are to change. Enes’ father will not be killed because of the negative international attention it would bring.

I hope you are right about his father. I don’t wish those things on anyone. My comment was referencing when Enes said “You can’t catch me!” in his tweet. That specific comment did not serve a greater purpose. That comment had very little value beyond Enes’ personal satisfaction. That comment is what I refer to as “poking the bear”.

Enes is a multimillionaire, and can probably buy about anything he wants. I would get together some real life expendables and blow this dude off the map.

Like Ross Perot did back in the seventies when the Iranians took the hostages. The ones who worked for Perot didn’t have to wait for Reagan to finally come home. No, Ross sent in mercenaries to bring them home!

we have much bigger problems in the world than ISIS and evil dictatorships. the polar bears are in danger due to the global warming.

That comment seems like sarcasm, but there is truth in it. The truth may take a 100 years to see, though. Science is truth. Have you noticed the changes that science has caused on life span over the past 50 years? How about birth rates? Diseases? Manufacturing? Agriculture? Don’t worry, it won’t affect your life; just your kids’ and grandkids’ lifes.

Seriously? In the 70’s all of these ‘scientist’ said if we didn’t change our ways the world would be frozen by the middle 90’s. How’d that work out? I didn’t hear anyone worrying about the polar bears being frozen in ice! The environmental leftist are absolutely as bad today. Whatever happened to ‘global warming’? Oh, that phrase didn’t work so it just got changed to ‘climate change’! No shit, the climate ‘changes’ every damn day! All you have to do is stick your head out the door and you can predict it!

Leaders who have drawn Trump’s praise: Erdogan, Putin, Duterte, Xi, Kim Jong Un and Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. There’s a group to be proud of, but at least he feels he can fit in with that motley crew .
