Meeks: “We’ve come a long way from the Billy Gillispie days”

Jodie Meeks spoke very highly of John Calipari during his press conference today. He said he talks to Cal whenever he is in town and Cal always says he wishes he could’ve coached him but he’s happy it worked out in the NBA.

Jodie is happy for Calipari’s success, too, and what he means to UK. “We’ve come a long way since the Billy Gillispie days,” he said, laughing.

Meeks also said he believes they could’ve gone undefeated in 2009-10 had he stuck around for his senior season.

He will graduate Saturday after five summers of coursework since turning pro.

    Meeks cost us a championship.
Would have been huge if Cal did it his first
    year at UK.
Meeks is right, we would have gone undefeated.

Meeks owed us nothing. He pursued his dream. Couldn’t be happier for him getting his degree. Kentucky, and our fans, seem to be doing just fine.

I hope you just carelessly used the wrong word. Meeks didn’t ‘cost’ us anything.

    • I wouldn’t say he “cost” it, but boy, Casper is right about what it would have been like for Cal to have won it his first year! Assuming we still win in 2012, we’re going for #10 next year!!! But, coulda shoulda woulda I guess. *sigh*

if he had returned for his senior year and won the championship, he would have been drafted higher and made more money and played longer in the NBA. And had his BS degree five years sooner.

Kudos to Jodie. 5 straight summer school sessions. Shows great fortitude and discipline especially with a big bank account in place.

Could you imagine the crazy expectations we would all have had Cal come in here in his first year and gone undefeated?!

It would have gone down as the greatest turnaround for a team & the greatest coaching hire of all time!!

Fulfilled a promise to your family and graduated from college. Jodie Meeks, UK grad, NBA player for five years, that’s a pretty good example you’ve set there. Congratulations on the degree.

Alright nation time to vote. Who will end up having the better Laker career Jodie Meeks or Kobe Bryant?

Since Kobe never scored 54 points in college it has to be Jodie obviously.

My all-time favorite Laker will likely be Jodie Meeks, but….

Bryant has a billion points and 5 NBA titles. I don’t know how many MVPs he has either.

That’s just not a fair comparison. But I will always prefer Jodie Meeks – because he’s Jodie Meeks.

Key comment that shows his character:

    (on being recognized in class)
“I’m just a regular person, just another student working towards a degree”

Shows a lot of humility on his part.

So who do we lose to? We know how Jodie shoots in Knoxville, I was at that SC game, we win that 9 out of 10 times anyway. And WVU just needed some threes to fall. Duke (nah) butler (nah)

    • Luther, I don’t know what games you were watching. Sure, we can’t know for sure that we would have won them all, but cold shooting did us in against WVU, and Jodie could have made a huge difference.

I don’t know about going undefeated, but the 2009-2010 team with Jodie Meeks would have brought the hardware to Lexington. No way that team goes icecold from the 3 against West Virginia. I can’t fault him from pursuing his dreams, but he was the 41st pick. If he had waited a year, his stock would have skyrocketed!

    • Haha
      2:51 pm May 8, 2014 Permalink

      How many games they lose?

    • MadScientist
      3:11 pm May 8, 2014 Permalink

It’s interesting, the 2009-2010 team lost twice in the regular season, @ SC and Tenn, but I still don’t know if they would go undefeated with Meeks. When you look at the starting lineup: Cousins, Patterson, Miller, Wall and Meeks over Bledsoe, you have to look at games where Bledsoe was the leading scorer too, i.e. Miss St in the SEC tourney.
Plus if Meeks had stayed another year and started for the 2009-2010 team, Bledsoe would have come off the bench. Then EB is probably not a proceed-and-succeed player. Then the 2010-2011 team adds Bledsoe at the starting SG spot and the final four run looks different with a Bledsoe & Knight backcourt. If only….

    • If Jodie comes back we might not have gotten Bledsoe. Although, he may not have been planning to be a succeed and proceed player until his stock went up like it did, so maybe he would have come.

After the college experience Meeks had with Billy Clyde, would YOU have stayed in school, even with a new coach coming in?

    • JMFATZ47
      2:53 pm May 8, 2014 Permalink

Maybe? PPat could have done the same but chose to stay with Cal.

But yes, Jodie had a TERRIBLE experience under Gillispie. I still can’t believe how big of a joke that “coach” was. NO, you can’t have t-shirts made about the 54 pt performance. NO, Jodie, you aren’t allowed to shoot. I still remember Meeks with a baffled face, chuckling with the Florida players at the foul line.

Gillispie should have been tarred and feathered. I love how they staked him out and sent his a$$ out of town with the DUI he deserved months before…

I love that Jodie has kept working toward completing his degree. Hopefully the young guys are paying attention to this and use his example to make the most of their time here and get a degree now or later. It is not time wasted.

Congrats Meeks. Just wanted to bring up this topic, I am 17 and wanted to get others opinions, in my opinion UCONN is the Dook of our generation. In 4 years they knocked us out of the Final Four and National Championship. Myself and other UK fans my age can’t stand them in the slightest bit. Thoughts?

I get what you are saying JESSE but they don’t compare. Those duck teams were the dirtiest college team I’ve seen play the game. UCONN at least won fair and square.
