KSR’s 2019 NBA Draft Live Diary

Tonight is the big night, BBN. Former Kentucky stars Tyler Herro, PJ Washington, and Keldon Johnson are all expected to hear their names called in the first round of the NBA Draft, and we’re ready to talk about it here on Kentucky Sports Radio.

KSR’s Jack Pilgrim and Zack Geoghegan will be running this official live diary tonight, where we will be providing updates and responding to your comments on anything and everything draft related.

Let’s get this thing rolling.

7:30 – (JP) Good evening, friends!

First, let’s catch you guys up on everything that happened leading up to right now…

Tyler Herro is wearing a $60,000 watch tonight:

LOOK: Tyler Herro is wearing a $60,000 watch at the NBA Draft

The final ESPN Mock Draft has Washington going No. 13 to Miami, Herro going No. 14 to Boston, and Johnson going No. 27 to Brooklyn:

Come get your last-minute ESPN NBA Mock Draft

7:40 – (JP) Zion Williamson is officially a New Orleans Pelican.

And now, I can officially like him again.

(ZG): So Zion, Lonzo, Ingram, Hart, and 400 future first round picks? Not a bad haul…

7:47 – (ZG) Memphis Grizzlies select the Mike Conley replacement, Ja Morant.

Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. are going to be a problem.

(JP) Can’t wait to see Morant in the league. Glad he blew up the way he did this past year, deserves every bit of the national attention he has received.

7:51 – (JP) New York Knicks select RJ Barrett at No. 3

I’m convinced Barrett will put up 25 shots a game as a rookie with the Knicks, and their fans are going to love every second of it.

Now the fun begins the rest of the way…

(ZG): Barrett and Kevin Knox will combine for 50 shots in a game next season, I’ll put money on it.

Can we finally get to the picks we don’t know about yet?

If another player cries on camera I’m gonna start crying too so can someone yell or scream or something instead?

8:00 – (ZG) The Lakers, err, Pelicans, no, wait… The HAWKS will select De’Andre Hunter at No. 4

For now, Hunter is a Hawk.

8:05 – (JP) The Cleveland Cavaliers take Vanderbilt’s Darius Garland at No. 5

First SEC player taken off the board, really wish we got to see more of him last year.

Cavs reportedly considered trading the pick, wish my Celtics moved up to take him. Interesting fit with Collin Sexton…

(ZG): As a Cavs fan, I like the pick. I would have preferred Jarrett Culver but Garland’s playmaking could mix well with Sexton’s scoring. It’ll be an exciting (and frustrating) backcourt in Cleveland.

8:14 – (ZG) The Minnesota Timberwolves (via the Phoenix Suns) select Texas Tech wing, Jarrett Culver.

As I just said, this was the guy I wanted. Wolves might have just snagged its Andrew Wiggins replacement.

(JP) I still can’t believe Wiggins turned out to be such a bleh pro. Zero impact on the floor, empty stats every night. Don’t know who is going to trade for him and take on that disgusting contract.

I remember drooling over his high school highlights on YouTube like it was yesterday.

8:20 – (JP) Chicago Bulls select North Carolina’s Coby White at No. 7

I remember watching him at the Jordan Brand Classic practices and seeing Tyler Herro light him up. NBA scouts looked at each other like “who the heck is this guy…?”

Seems like a great kid, though. His story is inspiring.

Very interested to see how he develops as a pro. Elite speed, great size at 6-foot-5. Bulls still several years away from competing for anything, but a backcourt of White and Zach Lavine will definitely be fun.

8:28 – (JP) The New Orleans Pelicans (via Atlanta) select Texas center Jaxson Hayes

I remember there was a time that Kentucky fans felt Hayes would be a Wildcat for all of two or three days.

A frontcourt of Zion and Hayes will be ridiculous.

(ZG) That frontcourt could dunk over the Great Wall.

8:33 – (ZG) The Washington Wizards select Rui Hachimura

NBA Twitter is going to have a field day with this one. We can go ahead and chalk this up as the first surprise pick of the night. Reminder: the Wizards currently do not have a General Manager.

8:41 – (ZG) The Atlanta Hawks select Cam Reddish at No. 10

That’s now three Duke players in the top 10. Atlanta has been making all the right moves recently. I’d bet on Reddish being a solid NBA starter.

8:46 – (ZG) The Phoenix Suns (via Minnesota Timberwolves) take Cameron Johnson out of North Carolina.

Big fan of Cam Johnson. One of the best shooters you’ll see in this class. He’s old (23) but has an NBA-ready game.

(JP) This is a horrible pick and Phoenix should be ashamed of themselves.

In all honesty, I’m a fan of his game, but he could’ve been had at any point from 20 on. Taking him at 11 is ridiculous.

Should be a fun shooting backcourt with Devin Booker.

Washington will join former Wildcats Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Malik Monk in Charlotte.

Herro joins former Wildcat Bam Adebayo in Miami.

Back-to-back picks for the Wildcats. That’s pretty freaking awesome. Couldn’t be happier for Herro and Washington. Great fits for both players.

9:07 – (JP) Boston selects Romeo Langford with the No. 14 pick

(ZG) Meh is right. Is there a single person that is high on Langford?

9:15 – (ZG) The Detroit Pistons select Sekou Doumbouya.

The forward from France is the youngest player in the draft. That is literally all the information I can supply you with regarding him. The experts like him, though.

9:20 – (ZG) The Orlando Magic select Chuma Okeke out of Auburn with the No. 16 pick

Okeke is pretty obviously a future pro, but how many teams are going to convince themselves that Keldon Johnson isn’t worthy of being selected here?

9:26 – (ZG) The New Orleans Pelicans (via Brooklyn Nets) will select Nickiel Alexander-Walker from Virginia Tech

This pick will somehow find it’s way to New Orleans. The Pelicans continue to roll in the assets. Alexander-Walker is also the cousins of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

9:30 – (ZG) The Indiana Pacers are taking Goga Bitadze from the country of Georgia at No. 18

As we’ve mentioned on the site today. Bitadze was a member of the Mega Bemax team that Kentucky defeated in the Bahamas this past summer.

9:36 – (ZG) The San Antonio Spurs select Luka Samanic out of Croatia.

We are now entering the territory of names that I have never heard in my life before. I really wanted Keldon Johnson to find his way to San Antonio, but the Spurs sure do love those international players.

9:41 – (ZG) The Philadelphia 76ers (via Boston Celtics) will select Matisse Thybulle out of Washington

Ah yes, a premier player from the Pac-12 that no one has ever heard of. He’s heading to Philly though as a part of a trade that sends Boston the No. 24 and 33 picks.

9:50 – (ZG) The Memphis Grizzlies (via Oklahoma City Thunder) are taking Brandon Clarke out of Gonzaga at No. 21 overall

One of the best defenders in the draft is heading to Memphis via a pick swap with the Oklahoma City Thunder. OKC will now pick at No. 23.

9:58 – (ZG) Jack Pilgrim’s Boston Celtics are selecting Grant Williams with the No. 22 pick

The back-to-back SEC Player of the Year is now a Celtic. I can’t wait to hear Jack’s thoughts on this gem.

10:00 – (ZG) The Oklahoma City Thunder (via Memphis Grizzlies) are taking Darius Bazley

If you remember, Bazley decommitted from Syracuse so he could train for the 2019 Draft. Looks like it paid off. He also received $1 million from New Balance during his year off. Not a bad deal.

10:09 – (JP) The Phoenix Suns (via Boston… via Philadelphia) select Virginia’s Ty Jerome

Cool pick. Good for them. Whatever.

Let’s talk about Boston’s draft/roster now…

Romeo Langford AND Grant Williams? Are you kidding me? Can you dream of a more anti-Kentucky team than what Danny Ainge has constructed for my beloved Celtics?

Kyrie Irving and Jayson Tatum- Duke

Jaylen Brown – spurned Kentucky out of high school

Terry Rozier – University-6

Al Horford – Florida

Marcus Morris – Kansas

Grant Williams – Tennessee

Romeo Langford – Indiana

Does Danny have a deal for Grayson Allen up his sleeve? Taking Luke Maye in the second round? Hiring Christian freaking Laettner as an assistant? I know half these players will likely be gone after this offseason, but goodness. This is rough.

Moving on…

10:16 – (JP) The Portland Trailblazers select UNC’s Nassir Little with the No. 25 pick

Surprised he fell this far, but that’s a pretty solid pick for Portland. Ton of upside, used poorly in Raleigh last year. Excited to see how he develops.

LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Should have a serious opportunity for playing time in Cleveland right away.

Three first-rounders for John Calipari, all three in solid situations. Very impressive draft for Kentucky.

Go Cats.

10:22 – (JP) AUDIBLE! OMAHA! Keldon is NOT going to the Cavaliers.

Instead of taking Keldon, Cleveland has changed their mind and will select someone named Dylan Windler.

The wait continues…

10:33 – (JP) Only two more picks for Keldon Johnson to be a first-rounder…

Johnson would join Jarred Vanderbilt as the only one-and-dones under John Calipari to be taken in the second round…

Keldon likely would have gotten solid playing time in Cleveland right away, but San Antonio gives him a legitimate opportunity for development under one of the greatest coaches in NBA history.

Couldn’t be happier and more relieved to see him have his name called in the first round. Great kid and deserves a great opportunity in the NBA.

And with that, we’ll call it a night.

Thanks for following along with us here at KSR.

Any other dads on here crying like a baby with some of these interviews? Lol, good stuff. Also, if you haven’t read Coby White’s piece in The Player’s Tribune, do yourself a favor and go do it. I’m rooting for that young man as much as I am anyone.

Thanks man, I didn’t know that about Coby but I was impressed after hearing him interviewed. And I saved that story to read later, thanks again for recommending it.

It’ll break your heart man. I’m a dad to a 9 yo, a single dad at that. I also just lost my dad a few years ago and he was only 56. Stuff like this hits me hard! Lol.

I try man. His mom is still in the picture and she’s a great mom, but she only gets him every other weekend. I gave up two houses, a car, and ownership in a restaurant group for my boy and I’d do it again a million times over.

That’s admirable nocode96, I don’t know many if any young single fathers who would go to those lengths.
