Kings announcer placed on leave after tweeting “All Lives Matter” at DeMarcus Cousins

Remember Grant Napear? The Sacramento Kings play-by-play announcer who once called DeMarcus Cousins “the crudest, most vile player” he’s ever been around was placed on administrative leave by his radio station yesterday following a Twitter exchange with Cousins about the Black Lives Matter movement.

On Sunday night, Cousins asked Napear on Twitter what he thought about Black Lives Matter, to which Napear responded, “ALL LIVES MATTER…EVERY SINGLE ONE!!!”, a phrase commonly used — mostly by white people — to dismiss the movement.

Cousins replied, “Lol as expected.” Fellow former Kings Chris Webber and Matt Barnes also responded.

Jason Ross, the program director at KHTK, started Napear’s show on Monday with this statement.

“Grant Napear has been placed on administrative leave while we are investigating the statement that was made on Twitter.”

The Sacramento Kings and NBC Sports California also released statements on Napear’s comments.

“Grant’s recent Twitter comments do not reflect our organization’s views and values,” the Kings’ statement read. “We are reviewing the matter further with our broadcast partners NBC Sports California and Sports 1140 KHTK.”

Napear, who has served as the play-by-play announcer for the Kings since 1988, apologized in an interview with the Sacramento Bee’s Marcos Breton yesterday morning.

“I’m not as educated on BLM as I thought I was,” Napear said. “I had no idea that when I said ‘All Lives Matter’ that it was counter to what BLM was trying to get across.”

This is not the first time Napear has been criticized for racist language. When former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was caught on tape making racist comments in 2015, Napear defended him, arguing that Sterling wasn’t racist because he employed black people.

[Sacramento Bee]

UPDATE (6:22 p.m.): KHTK announces they are parting ways with Napear.

So, only certain lives matter? I agree that racism has absolutely no place in our world but this is also a blatant form of racism if people are actually saying that ONLY lives matter.

Responding to BLM with bad faith arguments that it is attempting to elevate black lives above others is the same blatant deflection tactic used to attack all Feminists as sexist.

As you well know, Black Lives Matter is a cry that Blacks are being treated worse, their rights oppressed, their deaths dismissed. It is implicit that all lives matter when you claim black lives matter. While there are black supremacists, just as there are misandrist feminists, they are the outliers, not the core, just like how the looters and weapon users are not representative of the protesters.

Responding All Lives Matter or Blue Lives Matter proves the point of the BLM protesters.

A better way to phrase it would’ve been “I believe everyone deserves to be treated fairly.” He didn’t mean that when he used a phrase that has been used to counter BLM for years, so he can’t claim poor understanding of BLM. He’s witnessed the BLM protesters plenty as a basketball announcer.

It’s all about context. Of course all lives matter. But when a cop kills some black dude and he doesn’t even get charged or lose his job… sometimes I feel like “Don’t black lives matter”? You see…. that’s the original context from years ago. So when someone responds with “all lives matter” they totally miss the point and insult half the country. It’s 2020 and the entire world is protesting for black people to be treated equally. How are you so blind and indifferent?

Can you just walk a mile in their shoes and imagine how different your life would be if you weren’t white?

I am one of the most die-hard liberals on this site. I simply think the democratic party generally does a better job at governing than the right. But this current BLM movement is a crap-show. And it really is tapping into some other under-the-surface issues. The VAST majority of the protesters are kids…mostly all under 35…with no real leadership in their ranks. As most of us in our late 40s, 50s, and up view this generation as having been exceptionally spoiled and coddled….be it white, black, asian, lqbtq, etc….all of them…coddled and given participation trophies. So when we see on TV large groups breaking into stores around the country…destroying private property, cars, and businesses people have worked so hard to build, then it pisses me off and I tend to have very little sympathy for their cause. Is police profiling and brutality a problem? Absolutely! But it doesn’t justify the shear thuggery we’ve seen in virtually every city. So maybe it is an age thing, more than a race thing…and no easy answers any way you look at it.

    • Han
      12:16 pm June 2, 2020 Permalink

Gotta love when people in their 40s and 50s call millennials and boomers whiners or coddled, the participation trophy generation, as if we gave ourselves the trophies.

There are looters, organized and not, and there are violent agitators, but the other thousands and thousands of protesters are peaceful and righteous, and dismissing their voices to focus on the violence, while continuing to deny the systemic police abuse, only reinforces the problems people are protesting. Police are turning off body cams and people want to focus on the violent protesters. The President has peaceful protesters violently dispersed before curfew so he could take a photo with a Bible he’s likely never read. Donald Trump wants to paint all protesters as “antifa” terrorists just like he calls all negative news fake and all critics Democrats. Don’t fall for it. Police should be held to a higher standard, as should politicians. Thuggery from them is infinitely worse because it’s there job to protect and represent us, not to DOMINATE Americans.

The black lives lost in inner cities is mostly due to under-policing, either due to cowardice or indifference. When the police do make arrests for those killings justice is served 99.9% of the time.

When peoples said “Save the Whales” do you really think that meant those people didn’t give a crap about other animals?? Of course they did. It was just that whales needed extra protection at that time.

I just want to give an RIP to Tony Timpa. He had nearly the same thing happen to him as Floyd. Both were terrible. Timpa’s didn’t get as much continued coverage. I think everyone agrees that what happened to Floyd was awful and the officer should be prosecuted. Now the question is will they be able to upcharge him when compared to Mohamed Noor in the same city a few years ago that shot an innocent, unarmed white woman. I think they will in this case because he was on top of him for so long. Hopefully there is an impartial jury and the cop is punished severely.
On a side note, do we for sure know that this cop was racist towards Floyd? It is possible that he hates black people. The cop does have an Asian wife so I’m guessing he’s not a white supremacist. He also worked with Floyd so I wonder if there is something to the story we just don’t know about yet. I know the video was terrible, but I try to treat each situation on its own without generalizations such as this must have been an example of racism because the cop was white and the victim black. It may have just been severe overreach and more a policing issue just my opinion.
Just like when the Cov Cath kids were put on blast. It’s usually better to wait and get the facts regarding allegations of racism. Obviously the Floyd and Timpa cases were different since they were on video…but in general….

I wish people would listen and empathize with a section of our country that has been telling everyone for years that they feel mistreated and devalued by our systems of authorities. If we all listened; instead of playing word games or semantics we wouldn’t be dealing with this now. Again, as others have already said BLM doesn’t mean black lives are more important than anyone else’s life. It an attempt to point out the violence and police brutality that disproportionately impacts black lives. Stating All Lives Matters as a counter point is refuting the cries of adjusted they’re pointing out. Hope this helps!

This is all BS. Blacks can tell me what I can/cant say and think? They get to decide something is offensive and deserves persecution? LOL….total BS. Its about POWER. Ability to control. Maybe I can decide certain phrases are racially offensive to me and cost a lot of innocent people their job or businesses. Im sure KSR will delete this…..cant offend anyone can we.
