Former UK national champion and current Charlotte Hornets forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was back in the Bluegrass this morning, working with the Special Olympics at the Joe Craft Center.

According to LEX 18, 60 athletes from around the state were attending the camp. Kidd-Gilchrist, seven members of Kentucky’s women basketball team, and players and coaches from local colleges and high schools worked with the athletes on general basketball skills and organized five-on-five games.

Kidd-Gilchrist, who struggles with a speech impediment, participated in a Q&A and said the event was special to him.

“It’s great. Anybody who knows me and my background, I have my own challenges as well so I feel great knowing that I have a passion for people in general,” said Kidd-Gilchrist.

The 2012 national champion was happy to return to Lexington. “It’s a great feeling,” said Kidd-Gilchrist about being back in Lexington. “This is always a home base for me, my family, my friends.. it’s home base for me.”

Hear what he had to say this morning below:

The former #2 overall pick is not a part of the NBA free agency frenzy this evening after picking up his 2019-2020 player option with the Hornets earlier this month. The deal will keep Kidd-Gilchrist in Charlotte another year and pay him $13 million.

MKG is a special person and player in all ways. No pun intended.
No NC without him in 2012.

I agree bige… Wasn’t he like 17 of 17 against Indiana in tourney or 16 of 16 or something crazy like that from free throw line? Yes, I know I can google this but I’m too lazy
