I am not a political person, but I do feel a little bit of pride this morning as we get ready for the Fancy Farm Picnic, Kentucky’s political event of the year. Why? Our own Matt Jones is the emcee and he, Ryan Lemond, and Drew Franklin will be on stage while pundits, political nuts, and, yes, KSR fans, tune in to watch the drama unfold at 3 p.m. ET on KET.

There will be headlines — Matt Bevin vs. Jack Conway, Mitch because he’s Mitch — but I’m much more interested in how much BBQ Ryan eats and watching him and Drew try not to mess anything up or knock something over on television. If you’re in the KET viewing area, tune in at 2:30 p.m. ET. (There’s apparently a thirty-minute pregame show before the speeches begin.) If you’re not in the viewing area, don’t worry. There will also be a live stream at www.ket.org/fancyfarm.

Here’s the speaking order:

And, the rest of the day’s news…

Jamal Murray and Aussie big man Isaac Humphries are on campus

Late last night, word trickled out of Lexington that Jamal Murray and Isaac Humphries are in town for a visit. We still don’t know if Murray will participate in the Canadian National Team training camp for the FIBA Americas Championship, but having him on campus is a good sign. Meanwhile, the 7-foot Humphries is in the class of 2016 and has been playing at La Lumiere School in Indiana. He’s considered the 4th best center in the 2016 class, and could reclassify to join next year’s team. Will he? Stay tuned to KSR this weekend for updates.

The Yahtzee Dice get a breather before Monday

It was a busy week for Mark Stoops and company, but it looks like they’ll get a brief break from rolling the dice. 2017 four-star running back Mohamed Ibrahim will visit Kentucky on Monday, and we’re hearing it’s likely he’ll commit. The 5’9″ 178 lbs. Ibrahim is considered the 18th best running back in the 2017 class and the 9th best player in the state of Maryland, and will bring his teammate, four-star athlete Joshua Paschal, with him. The 6’4″ 255 lbs. Paschal is the brother of former Cat TraVaughn Paschal, considered the 27th best athlete in the 2017 class, and also seems high on the Cats.

All that being said, you never know. Keep the dice on standby just to be safe.

John Calipari’s ProCamps continue

Karl Towns, Willie Cauley-Stein, Devin Booker, Trey Lyles, Dakari Johnson, and the Harrison Twins are all in town for John Calipari’s ProCamps, which mean two things:

  • More pictures of the former Cats with fans, which will make you miss them
  • More videos of Booker on that scooter

Hopefully he remembers how to use his legs when training camp starts in September.

Nazr Mohammed plays in the NBA in Africa game

Starting in about an hour, there’s an NBA exhibition game in Johannesburg, South Africa between “Team Africa,” which includes former Cat Nazr Mohammed, former UofL star Gorgui Dieng, and former Vandy star Festus Ezeli; and “Team World,” which includes former Morehead State star Kenneth Faried, Chris Paul, former Florida star Bradley Beal, Pau and Marc Gasol, and others.

It’s a pretty cool event that will support several charity groups in South Africa. You can watch on ESPN starting at 9 a.m. ET.

You’ll laugh at this PSA starring Coach Taylor

It’s not the same as “Friday Night Lights” being back on TV, but it still made my day.

I’ll spend the day the pool

That is, if the security code at my brother’s old condo complex still works. Nashville needs more public pools, y’all.

Enjoy your Saturday.

I suppose it is only a matter of time before Matt Jones runs for some kind of political office…he has the education, I’d imagine a relatively wide name recognition, and I think he has the interest in it from reading this blog for awhile. What would be a good first try for him I wonder? Go big right from the start for attorney general or sec. of state, start in the state legislature for a term or two, or maybe smaller with city council run?

I can’t imagine a more tortured day than listening to twenty-plus politicians speak, one after another. I’ve had root canals that were more pleasant.

Would have loved to have seen the KSR crew last night at the Fancy Farm 5k. Our crew times it (sets up the finish line and all that fun stuff) and are huge Wildcat fans. Won’t go down for the picnic, but I do hope you all enjoy our part of the state.
