It looks like Anthony Davis will finally have to wear a number on the back of his jersey that isn’t No. 23.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Davis and LeBron James – the current owner of the Lakers No. 23 – will have to wait until the 2020-21 season before the number exchange can become official.

After it was initially reported that James would gift the jersey number to Davis for the upcoming season, that is no longer the case.
Davis has worn the No. 23 during his entire NBA career with the New Orleans Pelicans and it was expected that James would switch to No. 6 – the number he wore as a member of the Heat – for Davis. The former Wildcat also wore No. 23 during his lone season at Kentucky and even in this now-famous picture of a glasses-wearing middle schooler.
In the report by Haynes, he cites issues from a business standpoint that has delayed the process. After missing the initial deadline of March 15, the Lakers had to try and work out a deal with the jersey manufacturer, Nike.
“Due to production issues and the massive financial hit Nike would have absorbed from the No. 23 James inventory that’s already been produced,” Haynes said. “Nike could not accommodate the request for this season, sources said.
As we know, Davis has a player option on his contract for next summer that he can opt out of and become a free agent. With the way everything has unfolded this summer, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Davis wearing No. 23 again next season, but in a different uniform. Or maybe he’ll wear it for 10 more years in Laker Land. But either way, he’ll have to find a new number for this season.
Any number suggestions for the Brow?
