WKU hires Charles Bassey’s guardian as assistant coach

USA Today

USA Today

The shady recruitment of Charles Bassey just got a lot shadier.

The WKU basketball program released a statement Tuesday afternoon announcing the addition of Hennssy Auriantal to its staff.

Auriantal is the controversial figure who brought Bassey and as many as 50 other international prospects to the United States over the last five years. He became Bassey’s official guardian once Bassey left Nigeria, but there are concerns regarding the process in which that happened.

Now, Auriantal is an assistant coach at Western Kentucky, only weeks after Bassey committed to the Hilltoppers and moved to Bowling Green, coincidentally.

“We’re happy to have Hennssy join our program,” Rick Stansbury said in the release. “He brings coaching and playing experience at the D-I level in all areas. Besides that, he’s a terrific person and has a beautiful family. We’re excited to have him as part of our team.”

Yeah, okay. You’re not fooling anyone, Rick.

Serious shade! If Cal was involved in anything close to this, reporters would be going berserk

It happens all the time, Trevor. Not at Western, but all over D-1 basketball. It’s a loophole the NCAA has left in (you couldn’t keep a recruit from playing for his dad, nor should you). Michael Peter Jr. committed to Washington where his dad became a coach, only to leave and go to Missouri where his dad was promptly hired and brought his brother. That is just ONE prominent example within the last twelve months.

Just because it happens all the time and isn’t against the rules doesn’t mean it isn’t shady. Consider tax write offs for the wealthy, or bitcoin trading.

He is referring to porter jr. If you didnt know that, don’t worry. You will be in high school soon.

Might as well cheat your ass off at a school like WKU

It’s NOT cheating. You shouldn’t throw that word so freely at a situation. It’s perfectly legal and allowed. Shady? Absolutely. Common? Do the research, of course it is.

Again, just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s not shady.

(Tongue in cheek) We tried the same with Tubby. But his oldest stayed his last year in Ga and Saul was “a different style of player”.

4ever: read my comment again…slowly. Words mean things. Don’t skip over them and don’t use them irrationally.

Well, at least we still have a sketchy D1 basketball coach named Rick in this state.

    6:17 pm July 3, 2018 Permalink

It’s not illegal and it’s not shady, it’s simply D-1 recruiting. Congratulations to Coach Stansbury and ‘good luck’. Some here at BBN just have to whine and cry when we don’t get a commitment from every top 100 prospect. It’s OK y’all. Let WKU and Coach Stansbury have Bassy. It’s gonna be fine. I like OUR team!

Shady, unethical, sketchy…all of the above and I can’t remember Cal going after Bassey, I don’t see anyone whining or crying and I can’t imagine Cal ever sinking to this level of “D-1 recruiting”. But whatever gets you through the night.
