Who You Really Can’t Bet Against in March

I’m sure you’ve already heard it this year. If not, be prepared as you’ll hear it non stop from your friends, family members, Twitter, Facebook, Joe in Accounting, you name it.

“You can’t bet against Tom Izzo in March.”

Fair. Tom Izzo is a helluva coach. He made a great run to the Final Four last year and is incredibly successful. But, let’s take a look at the last 10 years between Izzo and a man named John Calipari.

NCAA Tournament Appearances:

John Calipari – 9

Tom Izzo – 10

Sweet 16 Appearances:

John Calipari – 9

Tom Izzo – 7

Final Fours

John Calipari – 5

Tom Izzo – 3

Every advantage goes to Caliarpi, except for NCAA Tournament appearances and we all know what happened that year. Look, Izzo is a great coach but we need to change the saying and add Calipari in that breath. Just get ready to hear about it over the next month. It’s also insane that Calipari has taken every team he’s had for a decade to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament when they’ve been in the field.

Love Cal, but if you factor in the differential in talent it’s pretty obvious who has done the better job. I’m not going to say Cal would not have done what Izzo has done with Izzo’s talent, but I’d not bet on it. Again, not ripping Cal, but I think people *really* underestimate how good Izzo is.

Recruiting is part of the coaches job though, not just player development and x’s and o’s.

If people actually underestimate how good Izzo is then the man must be God.Only way i could see him being underestimated with all the praise he gets

I feel like this is really cherry picking though since if you make it the past 11 years then it adds another final four appearance for Izzo
