John Calipari calls in to talk about tweaks and his new book (Monday Show Thread)

cal-laugh

Good morning and welcome to the Monday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio. After he told the world what “the tweak” was on “CBS This Morning,” John Calipari will call into the show to discuss what prompted him to tell Andrew to pass more than shoot, and chat about his new book, “Players First.”

Also, the talk of the Bluegrass this week is who will go to the NBA and who will stay at UK next season. Some of the players went home this weekend to discuss the decision with their families, and the news could break at any moment. Tune in to hear the guys’ thoughts on the matter, including some insider info from none other than Ryan Lemond himself.

Join in on the fun by calling (502) 571-1080.

I am concerned about this remark that the twins believe they were not presented and showcased as they thought they should have been. It sounds like their focus was the NBA all along and that the team’s resposibility is to them, not the other way around.

Please tell Cal we want him to take some time to relax and get his body and mind some rest. It was a taxing season and he deserves some time away. Obviously he’ll want to get his coaching staff and roster in order, but he should take a bit of time for himself and his family over the next couple months.

Cal is being honest. That really was the tweak. I asked a friend of mine that is on the UK staff what the tweak was and received this text on the morning of 03/14/14: “Andrew drives strictly looking to get teammates shots, not to score. Same with Aaron when he plays point.” That night he had a career high 8 assists….

No way Dakari AND Willie come back…. just too crowded

    • Timmy J
      10:19 am April 14, 2014 Permalink

Why? Cause Willie can’t play the 4? Lee can’t play the 4? The more guys the better. Sure you might play 5 minutes less per game but it is about getting the title. Win the title and draft stock takes care of itself.

    • KevinM
      10:19 am April 14, 2014 Permalink

Bubba, keep your day job….you’re doing fine at that one.

    • Mc
      10:57 am April 14, 2014 Permalink

I don’t think what Bubba said is that out of line. If Dakari and Willie return we’ll have Towns, Lyles, Dakari, WCS, Lee, and AP splitting minutes at the 4 and 5. Poythress can play the 3, but he’s really a tweener.

There are 40 minutes in a game. 80 minutes between the 4/5 positions. There are at least 5 guys and at times 6 splitting these minutes so an average 16 minutes per game per player. Obviously a player like Lee may get 10 minutes a game increasing everyone else’s average to 17.5 minutes per game.

Will these players be willing to do this?

On Calipari talking to Dan Patrick, Cal didn’t say less than 5 would leave on his own, Patrick asked him to take the over/under 5 on how many would leave, and Cal said he’d take the under. Not exactly the same meaning as just saying less than 5 are leaving.

    • KevinM
      10:38 am April 14, 2014 Permalink

Cal did say he would be ecstatic if only 4 would leave. He said he then gets to keep teaching his guys and he said he would improve their free throws.

Matt, a stat on Dan Patrick says Cal is the king of OAD with 13.

Next up: Thad Matta w/5 Barnes w/4 Howland and Hewitt with 3……of course K and Roy aren’t in there because they are selling guys on coming back, not letting the families decide. That stat left of Boeheim as well as he has lost at least 4.

The discussion on age was tabled (along with a few other things) and the two sides agreed to address them following this season…at least this is what I remember hearing.

    • Michael Gray
      11:04 am April 14, 2014 Permalink

I can’t speak for Matt but as someone who is an avid researcher and watcher of the NBA. They actually never decided the one and done rule for this CBA, when the lock out was going on they tabled several minor points for discussion at a later time in order to get an agreement that would end the lock out. The one and done rule was one of those tabled decisions. Adam Silver wants to change it and he will be actively campaigning to change it this summer (if I remember correctly) now that the Player’s Union has a new head.

Outside of Randle I feel like every player considering the draft could improve their stock substantially with another year…including James Young. I understand Young is probably going to go and be drafted somewhere between 12-16, but if he comes back and improves his defense and basic skills he could easily be a top 5-6 draft pick next year…the question becomes what is the difference in the money over the first three years between pick 5 and pick 14? The answer is it’s literally twice as much money…9 mil over three years for pick 5 and 4.5 over three years for pick 14…same goes for the twins, Dakari, WCS, and Poythress…all improve their stock with improved seasons next year and one more year of growth…for those borderline second round picks I don’t see how they even consider going this year…

Will the right coach be chosen (no BG)? How long will it take to stabilize the program? All these thoughts running through my head when 30 seconds before I was getting hyped!

Rex has a track record for doing this kind of thing. Sometimes he just talks without the thought of consequences. He is a UK lore Hall of Famer and I don’t disown him. I know what Rex is and will be less inclined to catch him when he is on the show or being interviewed.

    • Laker Cat 18
      11:48 am April 14, 2014 Permalink

Just out of curiosity, why do you think Barker is going to win the job? He wasn’t even near the best QB in Kentucky high school this year. He’s a great leader, but that’s all he’s really shown me from a UK standpoint. I personally think Phillips is the guy. He was the most impressive in last years Blue/White scrimmage. I see a battle between him and Whitlow with a possible Barker red-shirt in the end.

I think u are right but Brown said last year Towles had best arm but it didnt translate to live play! Yesterday Brown said now he sees those throws in live play!!! I think its Towles or Barker!

    • Delk for 3
      11:56 am April 14, 2014 Permalink

First, Drew Barker was certainly the best QB in Kentucky. He was the best and most talented. You aren’t invited to the Elite 11 camp if you aren’t awesome, and you aren’t named to the Army All-American game if you aren’t awesome. I watched him on ESPN in both events and he looked fantastic. He is extremely big, strong, accurate, and confident. You cannot say he wasn’t the best QB when he played for a Conner HS team with very average teammates. If he played for Trinity, the guy would have broken records for passing yards and touchdowns. Conner is not very good at all in football. That doesn’t take away from how good he is.

He’s way more than a good leader. He is certainly the most talented quarterback on the roster and it’s not even close. Stoops has insinuated as such. I guarantee you that Barker will not be redshirted and he will play next season. Mark my words.

    • Delk for 3

Redshirting Drew Barker would be a Joker Phillips-type of move. It’s not happening with Stoops. He’s determined to win some games this year and there’s no way it is going to happen with Whitlow, Smith, Phillips, or whoever. It only will improve with the playmaking skills of Drew Barker. Sure, he will have some bad times but will give the offense a player who can really concern defensive coordinators.

While im excited for Barker!! I think u are totally disrespecting Towles.. He had a hitch in his throw that Stoops and Brown say is gone..
