Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

What was up with that unicorn?

Like many of you, I was a little confused by James Wiseman’s stuffed unicorn he used as a prop to announce his commitment to Memphis. If we’re being open and honest here, it was a little weird, right? But whatever. The kid likes colorful unicorns, good for him, I thought. Who am I to judge?

Turns out, Wiseman is part of the “Unicorn Fam,” a trio of highly-touted basketball recruits, which also includes 2020 prospects RJ Hampton and Jalen Green. They earned the nickname because they’re considered basketball unicorns, given how special and unique they are at their positions, I presume. Maybe you knew that already. I did not.

Memphis really embraced Wiseman’s connection to unicorns, seen here in a photo Wiseman shared during his official visit last month:

If there is one positive takeaway from Wiseman’s disappointing announcement, it’s that we don’t have to pretend the unicorn thing is cool. It doesn’t make up for losing him to Penny Hardaway and Memphis after Kentucky was the presumed leader for more than a year, by any means, because that really sucked and the fan base is panicking right now.

But I really would’ve struggled to pump the unicorn hype machine if he had picked the Cats.

I say no more posts about Wiseman. Don’t care if he rides a hippo into his first game as a tiger. He’s not coming here so be done with him

I’m with you about the Wiseman coverage, but if he does ride a hippo I kinda wanna see that.

Fully agree. Wiseman should be the fodder of Memphis basketball sites, assuming they have any.

RJ Hampton to Memphis and reclassifies. Hurt to Memphis. Anthony to UNC. Edwards to Duke or MSU. Carey the same. McDaniels to San Diego and Brooks to IU. Sucks but it is what it is. Stewart is a toss up. I’d say he goes to whatever school Carey doesn’t, either Michigan State or Duke. Time to look to the 2020 kids and get some commitments early. Let’s not play the, “wait and see” who’s on the roster. Go ahead and get some studs now.

Memphis ha! Good luck kid, you or that unicorn are going to a final four.

That could explain alot, really. If he’s embracing the unicorn idea, then he apparently wants to feel different. That’s not what is marketed at UK.

Yeah but see, the reason why unicorns are special is because they’re rare. If there are three unicorns then that kind of goes against the definition.

Also isn’t Porzingis the unicorn already?

Thank goodness we dodged that bullet… I don’t want a guy that sits around his room playing unicorns on out basketball team. Maybe ok at a tea party or fortnite tournament, but not in a wildcat uniform. Nope…

Penny recruited a home town guy. This kid has become a hometown hero that will be a top pick in the NBA no matter where he goes. Momma didn’t want to cut purse strings. Time will tell if Penny can coach. All the pressure is on him now. Have to go somewhere to be back and Memphis hasn’t been anywhere, not will they.
