What to Watch for During Football Scrimmage

No need to freak out, but we’re just three Saturdays away from UK Football, you guys! More importantly there’s a scrimmage going on today, which could determine the fate of a couple of players as we had to the opener in September.

The biggest thing to watch during the scrimmage is the quarterback battle between Patrick Towles and Drew Barker. While Towles seems to be the no-brainer to start, since he was QB1 for all 12 games last year and looked pretty impressive, Barker has closed the gap during practices. In fact offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson has said he’s comfortable with either guy out there, which is a huge bump for Barker. If Barker outplays Towles in the scrimmage could we see a change at starter?

Can the wide receivers continue to impress? There’s plenty of talent in the receiving corps and who will stand out today? Recently it’s been Dorian Baker, but what about Blake Bone, could it be his turn now? What about Ryan Timmons? Keep an eye on the reports of what receiver does the most damage today.

Lastly, flip to the other side of the ball. Will the young defensive backs continue to prove they deserve to be on the field? Stoops has never been afraid to play a younger player and if this group continues to look sharp, will they get the shot they deserve?

Stay tuned as Nick Roush will have a full recap after the scrimmage and Stoops speaks.

Is it September 5th yet I just want to watch the CATS in action already. I believe this team is going 7-5 regular season with a bowl win to take us to 8-5. #ALLIN #WHYNOT

The “What To Watch For” headline is misleading and, dare I say it, “‘cruel”unless readers can attend that scrimmage. Please tell me we can and what time.
Here’s hoping Towles wins the starting job and does great enough to get drafted in the first round,
leaving Barker to start next year after doing regular cleanup duty with huge leads this year.
