It has been an extremely busy two weeks for John Vincent Calipari. Since the September recruiting period got underway early last week, he has been on the go, bouncing from home to home, working to build his next great recruiting class.
It’s not easy keeping up with Calipari when he’s on the move, but here are the confirmed stops on his September countrywide tour:
Monday, September 9 | Lexington, KY
Coach Cal spent the first day of the fall recruiting period in Lexington with his former players, fantasy campers, and a few special guests. Jahlil Okafor, Devin Booker, Tyler Ulis and Charles Matthews are some of the recruits who were in town for the alumni game. Ulis committed later that week.
Tuesday, September 10 | Apple Valley, Minnesota
Calipari’s first stop on the recruiting circuit was in Apple Valley, Minnesota to see Tyus Jones, the top-ranked available point guard in the 2014 class. Jones is a long shot, even more so now with Ulis’ commitment, but it ain’t over ’til it’s over when it comes to recruiting if you’re John Calipari.
Money Magazine named Apple Valley the 20th best place to live in the United States in 2010, FYI.
Wednesday, September 11 | Bedford, Texas
The Lone Star state opened its airways to John Calipari’s jet on Wednesday for a stop in Bedford, Texas to see Myles Turner, Scout.com’s No. 2 2014 prospect. Turner’s high school coach said the Turner family was very impressed by Calipari during the visit. Cal offered Myles a scholarship to UK before moving on to the next one.
Thursday, September 12 | Fullerton, California
Thursday was nothing but California love when Cal arrived on the west coast to see Stanley Johnson, one of his top targets in the class. Johnson trimmed his list to five schools shortly after their meeting. He’ll be in Lexington next month for Big Blue Madness.
No word on whether or not Cal stopped by In-N-Out Burger.
Friday, September 13 / Saturday, September 14 | Las Vegas, Nevada
If you’ve ever been to Las Vegas, you know it’s impossible to go and stay for one day. So Coach Cal did what anyone else would do while visiting Sin City, he extended his visit as long as he could.
He visited Kelly Oubre and class of 2015 star Stephen Zimmerman before taking in the Floyd Mayweather fight Saturday night from the fourth row.
Oubre tweeted, “Great visit with @UKCoachCalipari today! #UK #BBN”.
Stephen Zimmerman called it a huge honor to meet with Coach Cal.
Floyd Mayweather was escorted to the ring by Justin Bieber and a shirtless Lil Wayne.
Sunday, September 15 | Lexington, Kentucky
Coach Cal took a break from recruiting to work with his own players on Sunday, the first day college basketball teams were allowed to practice as a group with coaches. He said he is happy with his new team, but they have a long way to go.
“We’ve got a good talented team.”
Monday, September 16 | Indiana, ugh
No one, and I mean NO ONE, enjoys going anywhere in Indiana. But when two potential commitments are in the Hoosier state, some times you just gotta suck it up, make your way through the windmills, and do what needs to be done.
Cal visited Trey Lyles and James Blackmon Jr. on Monday. The two former Indiana commits are considered heavy UK leans at this point in their recruitment. Blackmon’s visit went great, he said.
After the visits, Cal got the hell out of Indiana.
Tuesday, September 17 | Lexington, Kentucky
The jet needed a breather and Cal had meetings in Lexington, so Tuesday was a day at home, as far as we know.
But hell, who really knows, he could’ve flown to see Dante Exum in Australia, knowing him.
Wednesday, September 18 | Mississippi
Devin Booker and Malik Newman were blessed by Calipari’s presence on Wednesday. Booker said Cal brought the entire coaching staff to watch his open gym in Moss Point.
Newman, a superstar in the 2015 class, met with Cal in Jackson.
Thursday, September 19 | Lexington, Kentucky
It was another day in Lexington for Calipari. He had Taylor County sophomore Quentin Goodin in town to watch practice and chat with the staff.
I don’t know how the man does it, but we’re glad he does.
