Wenyen Gabriel showed out tonight in the Bluegrass Showcase as his team, Wilbraham & Monson beat Thon Maker’s Athlete Institution, 83 to 73.

Both Gabriel and Maker played an aggressive game, but it was Gabriel’s team who came out on top. Gabriel’s first field goal came 11 minutes into the game with a 2-handed dunk, finishing his double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. His most important role came when he took over the second half and scored 11 straight points to bring his team back for the win.

Several one-on-one matchups between Gabriel and Maker gave each a chance to show off their aggression. Both players made it clear they weren’t going down {other than the occasional battle for the ball on the floor} without a good fight.

Following the game the Courier-Journal’s Kyle Tucker had the chance to catch a few postgame quotes. According to Tucker, Gabriel’s coach said he “may be the best teammate I’ve ever been around.” He also noted that his team got chills being in Rupp and that Gabriel told him he had not envisioned himself playing there until today.

This is a guy who has the physical and mental toughness the Cats are in need of right now.
