WDRB Report: Grand jury hearing evidence in Katina Powell case

According to the hardworking people over at WDRB in Louisville, a grand jury is hearing evidence from the University of Louisville’s sex scandal (the one involving Katina Powell, not any of the other sex scandals) today.

WDRB’s Jason Riley said he is hearing prosecutors are looking into evidence on three people involved. Katina Powell and Andre McGee are two of the three; the other is a mystery.

Here’s an excerpt from the report:

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Foster, who is in charge of a unit that prosecutes crimes against children, is handling the case.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Wine has said the allegations from the book cause “grave concern to me and this community.”

“If my office receives credible evidence of sexual abuse or other criminal activity involving minor children, we will vigorously prosecute those responsible for those crimes.” [WDRB]

Ya catch that? “Vigorously prosecute those responsible for those crimes.” That could be a big plot twist in this whole thing, taking it from an NCAA basketball problem to a criminal problem for some of the guilty parties.

So Drew are you saying this could be a good thing for the Basketball program?

This has Jurich’s hand all over it. He knows this was his last card to play. She will be left with the option of saying she made it all up or going to jail.

He must know the hammer is coming down and he’s pulling the pin on this as a last resort.

“Hand all over it” certainly fits here.

McGee will take the 5th on every question so don’t expect this to reveal any secrets.

The last time Pitino got in a tight spot, a woman went to prison for two years. I would be very surprised if Pitino and the University don’t spin this as them being the victims in this case. Rich people can buy their freedom and poor people go to jail, the majority of the time.

Yes, those dastardly hookers FORCED these sweet choir boys to have sex with them and the school to host their ceiling-soaking shenanigans. Powell and her girls will get prison time and probably have to pay Rick and his boys money for pain and suffering….unless the venue gets changed to outside of Jefferson County.

Card fans will immediately be excited she might get in trouble. Then someone will explain to them that this makes the whole thing even less deniable, and they will shut up.

Everything about that is true except for the part where reason, logic, and facts will ever make Card fans shut up about anything

I was wondering when this would come up. Those mentions of using her daughters really struck me as something very concerning.

BUT…this means McGee will be called to the carpet. Maybe now we get to hear his side, and he spills the beans about how he took the rap for the whole thing, and sings like a bird. It could go many ways

You don’t think Jurich and Pitino could scrape together enough cash to get McGee to take the fall for the whole thing? McGee’s an out-of-work assistant coach who probably never made $100k/yr his whole career, offer him $500k under the table in a numbered Swiss bank account and he’ll say the whole thing was his idea and he hid it from his bosses, do a year or two in jail, and collect his earnings.

The reason the Commonwealth’s Attorney is bothering with the case at all is because of the age of some of the girls involved. Powell’s in waaaaaaaay more trouble than anyone else in this investigation, she definitely knew how old her daughters were. McGee could just say he didn’t know or ask.

The whole thing stinks to high heaven but Ricky P and Jurich will come out smelling like a rose. Powell will probably take the fall and she certainly deserves to be punished in some way but Pitino knew what was going on. But look who took the fall for his infamous 15 second romp in a restaurant.

Would you take 500k to spend 7 years in jail for prostitution? I wouldn’t

    • Mathlete
      1:49 pm May 25, 2017 Permalink

McGee wouldn’t spend 7 years in jail for soliciting prostitutes, it’s a misdemeanor so the most he could do is 1 year per offense (and they’re not going to throw the book at him in Jefferson Co.).

Now, that said, what would you do if these were your choices:
      – get a decent lawyer, plead guilty and spend a few months in jail for Tom and Rick and get $500k, or…
      – spend what money you have on whatever lawyer you can afford, try your luck, and (hopefully) spend no time in jail so you can go back to driving for Uber (which is the last thing I heard of him doing)?

The Commonwealth”s Attorney is a grad of UofL and UofL Law School. I do not believe any serious Card fan wants Andre McGee under oath, telling where he got the money and who else knew what was going on. There is no way in Hades the grass roots fan base would stand for McGee and Powell going to jail while the three multi-millionaires who were above him in the chain of command continue their current life style.

You’d think that were true, but the most vocal part of their fanbase didn’t care that U of L was bankrupting the Yum Center and robbing the city blind in the process, or that their AD got a multimillion dollar bonus on the scandal-plagued University President’s way out the door, or about any part of the Karen Sypher saga, or that the school has no cash while the football stadium is getting a totally unnecessary expansion, or…. You get the point.

Mathlete no truer words were ever spoken. The cesspool that is UofSmell could care less about any of this ‘tarnishing’ the university. Hell, most of them consider it a badge of honor. You know, we’re winning games and all.

How interesting is it that this is coming about just when the NCAA is due to hand out its verdict? Nice diversion attempt by the city scum known as Loserville. Possibility city baby!

The Grand jury declined to indict Andree McGee or Katina Powell apparently. The quote:

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office determined there was not the “legally required independent corroboration of the allegations” made in Powell’s book, “Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen,” to justify recommending an indictment.

In a statement, Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Wine said that “in the final analysis there is not sufficient credible evidence assembled to support bringing criminal charges against these individuals.”

Upon publication of the book, law enforcement authorities were originally concerned that Powell used under-aged girls to entertain the recruits. Once it was determined that no under-aged girls were used, the investigation focused on Prostitution, Unlawful Transactions with a Minor, and other possible criminal charges. During the investigation, all of the women identified in the book denied having sexual contact with any of the recruits or receiving payment for sex acts. Interviews with recruits revealed that there were instances of sexual contact with unknown women. However, none of the recruits were able to confirm any payments had been made to the women by McGee or anyone else. Nor could the recruits positively identify any of the women with whom they had sexual contact.
