WATCH: Somerset Wins Kentucky 2A State Championship in Dramatic Fashion

The Somerset Briar Jumpers won their first state championship in miraculous fashion.

Playing against perennial powerhouse Mayfield in the Class 2A final at Kroger Field, Somerset surrendered the lead to the Cardinals by allowing 14 points in almost ten seconds. Leading 31-28, Mayfield tried to grind the game away on the ground. They were able to get the clock to 28 seconds before giving the ball back to Somerset on its on 14. What happened next was spectacular.

With junior quarterback Kaiya Sheron leading the way, a 6’4″ pocket passer who has an offer from UK, the Briar Jumpers quickly moved the ball down the field to the 35-yard line with three seconds to play. Their prayers were answered on the last-ditch effort in the form of a pass interference.

The penalty gave Somerset one more chance for a victory. Tate Madden shook free on the untimed down to catch Sheron’s 20-yard game-winning touchdown pass

What a way to win.

This kids confidence is going to go through the roof. He needs to play for the cats and become a legend. Great win and great way to finish the season off guys. Congrats to all the players on both sides. Tough way to lose a game especially a State Championship game, but hold your heads up high young men and get back next year.

Talent level in the State of Kentucky is getting better and better the last few years, I’d love to have a few of the best ones stay every year from now on, they just seem to make a difference whether it’s on the field or off. Helps bring pride and it spreads throughout the team. Anyway, great game

That was a terrible PI call to give Somerset another play. This is the second time in 3 years mayfield has gotten awful calls in critical situations to lose state championships.

You can pause it at the :11 mark, see the contact, and the ball isn’t in the screen yet. I don’t expect a Mayfield fan that always think they’re cheated to buy it though.

I don’t agree big sexy, that’s not pass interference. I’m not a mayfield fan, I have family in somerset, so I’m glad they won, but that wasn’t pass interference. What is he supposed to do? he went up for a 50/50 ball, it was the offensive player that initiated the contact. if anything it was offensive pass interference.

They called it on the push in the back, or a lean into , while ball is in air, more like a great attempt to hinder a jump , like a rebound attempt… . But pass interference, for sure Pause at .11

He can go for the ball but he can’t go through the WR before the ball is there. It was close but I can see why they threw the flag. I will concede that had they not thrown the flag it would not have been some egregious no call.
