WATCH: Rookie Cole Custer’s exciting win at Kentucky Speedway

Live sports are officially back in the Bluegrass, and a rookie has claimed the first place finish. Cole Custer became the first rookie winner in the NASCAR Cup Series in nearly four years, surging to the lead in a four-wide, final-lap scramble Sunday at Kentucky Speedway. The race was Custer’s 20th series start in his young career.

“That was the best car I’ve ever driven in my life,” Custer said after the race. “We put it all together, and I can’t thank everyone enough.”

Here’s a look at the exciting finish:

The first-place finish came as a surprise to Custer himself.

“It’s not easy. You’ve got to kind of adapt as much as you can, and I think we’ve gotten better and better at that,” Custer said of racing amid COVID-19 concerns and restrictions after the race. “But it’s just unbelievable. I didn’t think that we were coming to win, and now we’re going to be in the All-Star race.”

Upon crossing the finish line, 22-year-old Custer celebrated with a frontstretch burnout as his crew happily ran to greet him.

Now, he’s ready to keep the celebrations going:
