After a lengthy recruitment Michael Drennen committed to Kentucky on National Signing Day, choosing the Wildcats over USC, Michigan and Florida.
Kentucky was long considered the frontrunner but USC made significant moves down the stretch, enough to convince the publisher of a USC website flew to Columbus for the ceremony. Scott Schrader did not see the Trojans land the No. 210 player in America. He did ask Drennen the question: “Why Kentucky?”
“A lot of it came down to who I thought had the best plan for me,” he said. “You know I feel like Kentucky had their opportunity to plan out a — they’ve known me since I was 13-years old. I’m now 18, so I feel like they’ve known me for so long. I know the coaches there and the staff. I’ve been there. I’ve got a great feel for the campus. I like it every time I go, so that’s the move.”
Despite the long-term connection, Drennen said he did not know with 100% certainty that UK was the choice until he drove to the facility.
