Makayla Epps has always been busy, but these days are different. Her current routine may not look like her “normal” one due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but she’s staying busy and even finding time to catch up with us, Kentucky Sports Radio. She was kind enough to chat during her lunch break, so you’ll get a peek into the back room of Footlocker (which explains why she’s dressed like a referee!).
One of the biggest pieces of news to come out of this weekend is Coach Matthew Mitchell’s recent health scare. His wife, Jenna, released a statement on Facebook letting everyone know his brain surgery was successful and he is recovering now.
Offline, Jenna Mitchell also reached out to her husband’s group text of UK Hoops alumnae in order to keep his former players updated. Epps checked in with him shortly after surgery to let him know she was praying for a speedy recovery.
“Coach Mitchell is always going to be my guy. He took a shot on me, gave a kid from Kentucky a chance to go to a prestigious Division I university for four years, and he dealt with all of my crap I made him go through,” Epps said. “That’s my guy. Definitely had to check in on him, and I’m really glad he’s alright.”
News broke last night that WBB Coach Matthew Mitchell is recovering from brain surgery.

Epps and I dive into several more topics during our conversation, including:
- How she’s staying busy back home in Marion County without basketball.
- How a text from Maci Morris changed her future plans and lead her to the Tennessee Conductors.
- If she’ll return to the Bluegrass to continue coaching high school basketball.
- Who’s the best UK player to ever wear No. 25?
- Why this is a pivotal moment for collegiate athletes to seize their power and make their voices heard.
In the video, I also mention my earlier interview with Maci Morris, which you can watch by clicking here.
