Washington picking up steam for Michael Porter, Jr. …and Trae Young?

On Friday, news broke that Michael Porter, father of Michael Porter, Jr., accepted a job on Lorenzo Romar’s staff at Washington, making the Huskies the clear favorite for the best small forward in the 2017 class. Not only is the Porter family moving to Washington, Porter’s younger brother Jontay is already committed to the Huskies and Romar is Porter Jr.’s godfather. So, the writing is on the wall when it comes to Porter, it seems.

But what about his BFF and EYBL teammate Trae Young? As recently as a few weeks ago, Porter and Young set the likelihood of attending the same school at 85% and Washington and Kentucky are among the schools that have offered both; however, John Calipari has made Young a priority in the 2017 class, and it seems like the feeling is mutual. Does that mean the package deal is done?

Not necessarily. Duke writers Andrew Slater and Chad Lykins made picks for Washington in Young’s Crystal Ball over the weekend. Much ado about nothing? Maybe. Duke writers messing with the BBN again? Perhaps. But, with Young considered the most likely point guard commit in the 2017 class, something to keep an eye on.

Both kids need to look up the word A-N-O-N-Y-M-I-T-Y

how is it okay to hire a guy’s dad and pay him 100k or whatever an assistant at Washington makes and then recruit his son? you can’t give a kid money to come to your school, but you can just give it to their parents and give them a “job”?

Funny how those “other” schools have to resort to crap like that to lure recruits away from UK (cough cough, Louisville), and most of the time it still doesn’t work. So exactly WHAT can Washington legitimately offer a kid who wants to heighten his chances of a #1 draft pick?

This is different, Romar and Michael Porter are best friends. Romar is Michael Porter Jr’s God father. He’s been trying to get him on the staff for years. Porter Jr. is definitely not coming. The dad said they are going to recruit him hard. I’m a UK hoops fan, but I went to UW. It’s in a beautiful city and the school that has a rich endowment. Not comparing it to the UK hoops machine but it is still very strong. It’ll be to much to overcome, Cal is going to be in his living talking to a UW assistant coach?!? He’s going to UW.

Maybe old history, but when Pitino recruited Jamal Magloire, I believe his high school coach came with him as an “administrative assistant” and left when Magloire did.

I honestly don’t understand why athletes that are projected to be one and done even remotely consider schools not named kentucky or duke at this point. i mean yeah kansas is great and is a great option, but they haven’t had a ton of success with one and done guys. michigan state hasn’t had much success with these kind of players and neither has north carolina. do these kids realize that they are potentially costing themselves millions of dollars by choosing to play at some level 2 school like Washington? it is mind boggling. I’m not advocating that they all come to UK (although that would be great), but they really need to make better business decisions… i mean dear God look at Booker and Ulis as prime examples of what UK can do for talented players. come on…

    Rant over.

I think we need to have a three year plan with briscoe. He plays backup point this year and some two, then takes over full time in 2017, hopefully elevating himself to the lottery.

As others have said, historical evidence says it would be a bad move. But, it’s a somewhat free country.

I thought Michael Porter was in jail. Either way you’d think he’d be out of eligibility…
