Was Julius Randle Used to the Best of His Ability?

Larry Vaught posted an interesting short article on his website, vaughtsviews.com earlier today.  In the article, Larry referenced ComcastSportsNet’s Central Kyle Draper who questioned whether or not Randle was used to the best of his ability while at Kentucky.  Draper’s analysis:        Image via dimemag.com

“He’s the most NBA-ready outside of Jabari Parker.  A double-double machine.  One NBA source told me John Calipari did not use him to the best of his ability.

I will be the first to admit that Julius has his fair share of weaknesses, and will need to improve a lot to become anymore than a decent NBA player.  He is extremely left-hand dominate, he isn’t a good passer, and his defense needs works.  However, how many 19 year old kids truly are ready for the NBA?

The notion that one of the best players in the country, and the best player on a team who went to the NCAA championship game, “wasn’t used to the best of his ability” seems ludicrous to me.  Sure, Julius needs to get better and develop his game, but that is no fault of Kentucky or John Calipari.

Wasn’t used to the best of his ability or was part of a very poor offense for the better part of the season. Spacing and ball delivery hurt him badly, in addition to a lack of motion away from the ball which would have allowed him to distribute some. Fact is that all too often we stood and watched whoever had the ball as they tried to go one on 1/2/3, and it hurt each player. Making shots would have been a large help, too.

Coach Cal said at the beginning of the year that at he could pound it inside to Randle all day and win some games….but that wouldn’t help develop Randles mid range game, which is something he will need in the NBA. I think coach was helping him by trying to improve other skill sets.

It’s pretty obvious that Randle was not used “to the best of his ability” or he would have averaged 14 more pts and 4 less reb per game…and we would have lost 8 more games, including the first on in the NIT. KY basketball is TEAM basketball whereas the NBA is about “I’m getting mine!” for all but a few elite teams with strong leadership and trust between the players and the coach.

The boys say they want some gin and juice
      But I really don’t wanna
Beer bust, like I had last week
I must stay deep, ’cause talk is cheap
I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as I continue you know they’re getting sweeter
So what can I do? I really beg you, my Lord
To me flirting is just like a sport
Anything fly, it’s all good let me dump it
      Please set in the trumpet

A little bit of Monica in my life
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man

      Mambo No. 5!

Jump up and down and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hands on the ground
Take one step left and one step right
One to the front and one to the side
Clap your hands once and clap your hands twice
And if it looks like this then you’re doing it right

A little bit of Monica in my life
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man

      Trumpet!
      The trumpet!
      Mambo No. 5!
      (ha ha ha)

A little bit of Jessica here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man

      I do all I do

By not using him “to the best of his ability,” I would imagine he means that Cal didn’t force him to play on the block 95 percent of the time so he could try and develop his perimeter game.

And the word you’re looking for is “dominant.”

Based on what I heard through parts of the season, I think some though he should have been take off of the block. Randall was considered to have a fairly good mid range game coming in, and if you look at all of the confusion in the back court, he could have played more of a point forward role. His ball handling was better than Terrance Jones at the same point and he could have put a lot of pressure on defenses and the pull up jumper was always there. Would it have worked? Who knows, but we never really tried it. We just stayed with Andrew.

Terrible scouting, while JR does need to work on going right he is above average when it comes to passing the rock. You may remember a certain pass to Aaron Harrison that was on the money for the game winner in the tourney. Don’t act like you know about sports when you don’t it makes you look childish.

Brandon has missed the point. The question isn’t whether Julius has weaknesses or how well he played last year or whether he’s NBA-ready. The criticism is directed to Calipari.

Unless going to the championship game means Cal was perfect, Brandon hasn’t answered the criticism.

There were a few things that limited Randle in college and a big part of it was being double and triple teamed. In addition to those things, when you have the caliber of talent we had, everyone needs to just play to their strengths. Teams that are not talented at every position require their star player to do more, be more versatile. Does that mean Randle can’t step out and hit mid-range jump shots? No. That is part of why they have the NBA combine and teams bring in players for workouts. They get a better assessment of that player all around. Take Anthony Davis for example, we all look at him now and say to ourselves, where were all those things when he was at UK? Well he always had the skill but with the talent on the team, we didn’t need those things from him because it could take away from others game too. Cal coached the guys to play a role and so far in my opinion he’s coaching each young guy very well.
