Walter McCarty is in consideration for the head coaching job at the University of Evansville. Adam Himmelsbach, beat writer for the Boston Globe, reported McCarty will interview for the job in Evansville on Wednesday.

McCarty is an Evansville native, so it’d be the perfect place to launch his head coaching career. The former UK great has been on the Boston Celtics staff since 2013, and got his first taste of being in charge when he coached the Celtics’ Las Vegas summer league team last summer.

Former Indiana Hoosier Calbert Cheaney has also been named as a potential candidate for the Purple Aces.

Glad to see that the 20,000 calorie diet that Pitino put him on to bulk him up has finally started to have some effects. 🙂 Hope he gets it – didn’t know he was from E-ville – my brother lives there.

Waltah is ready to be a head coach, and Evansville is probably a good place to start. Nice town, decent school, low pressure athletics programs.

Oh, and Memphis would have been better off hiring Li’l Penny.

So they fired Marty Simmons, I guess. Always liked him…he started his playing career at IU, and after a couple of years told Bob Knight to shove it.

That’s a solid place for McCarty – Missouri Valley Conference (getting good press with Loyola right now and UNI a few years ago), good location to hit several decent recruiting markets, hometown ties, and BBN love within easy reach.

Walter is a former UK great? That’s so sad!

Former player, obviously. But former great? Not what you meant to say there, Drew. It’s one of those expressions people use without thinking, like defenders who leave their feet (yikes!).

Megan you don’t think he was great? He was a vital piece of the 96 championship team. He was extremely skilled big guy who could run the floor, shoot and pass the ball. And play defense.

Cool. It’s not technically in Kentucky, but really Evansville is just a suburb of Henderson, right?
