Walter McCarty has been fired

Some unfortunate career news for a beloved Kentucky Wildcat as the University of Evansville has fired Walter McCarty. McCarty of course upset his alma mater in Rupp Arena earlier this year, but some very serious allegations off the court were too much for Evansville to tolerate.

The university sent out this letter to the Evansville community from it president, Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz. Here’s the part about the investigation into McCarty’s behavior:

As part of the ongoing inquiry, investigators have gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses, including Mr. McCarty. The investigation has uncovered persistent and troublesome facts regarding Mr. McCarty’s conduct, including attempts to improperly influence witnesses in the investigation. While the Title IX investigation will continue as required under our policies and by federal law, it has become abundantly clear that Mr. McCarty’s behavior violated the terms of his contract, making his continued employment untenable.

McCarty had been on administrative leave since late December. An Evansville native and local sports legend, McCarty coached only one full season for the Aces.

It’s a shame his historic win has been tarnished by some horrible decision-making.

Thanks for putting a damper on our season then getting fired, Walt!

    Hi Drew,
I would be careful before you start publicly feeling sorry for Walter. As a professor (not at UK) I know that a lot of Title IX investigations involve some pretty serious sexual allegations (not saying this was the case, here). Maybe wait until the facts come out before sympathizing with Walter’s “historic win being tarnished by some horrible decision-making). It’s possible there is more at stake than a career. Take care, go cats!

I don’t see anywhere that Drew was feeling sorry for Walter. In fact, this is probably one of the more unbiased articles ever released in this site! I mean, factually — it WAS a historic win, and it IS being tarnished by some horrible decision-making. Not sure how either of those statements are sympathetic.

Happy to be more specific. If Walter tried to cover up what is likely a rape investigation and someone says: it’s a real shame he ruined his career and a historic win trying to cover that up…what about the potential victim whose life will never be the same? And we are talking about basketball?

It doesn’t take a college professor to see that he was probably trying to cover up for the behavior of his player(s). If so, it is indeed a shame that he tarnished an otherwise historic win/season by doing this. And part of that is bringing in the wrong type of guys, which is also on him.

He’s not covering up for student. He’s covering up for HIS actions! Word is HIS involvement with a student! Not good at all…

Ugh! Yeah, that does seem to be the case, and I was hoping it wouldn’t be.

Pitino protege who spent many years under his tutelage. You learn from your teachers. Sad really. Personally I’m rather embarrassed that he was a Wildcat. Both of them for that matter.

I know a doctor in Evansville who works with the team who has said he knocked up a cheerleader and was bothering others.
