Vince Gill’s Saturday Morning Links

Image via ESPN

Belmont brings in celebrity fandom fire-power with country music star Vince Gill. Although I could not tell you one Vince Gill song, anybody that has won 20 Grammy’s (more than any other country musician) is worthy of a dedication in KSR’s morning links.

The KSR comment section is home to witty and inspiring remarks that often get overlooked because of the glut of garbage surrounding them. Sometimes the easiest way to retort is with a Ron Burgundy, “Stay Classy.” Deadspin points out the misuse of the classic Anchorman quote in very classy (and hilarious) way.(Warning: Deadspin doesn’t believe in censoring harsh language)

Here’s a great place to get all of the stats and story-lines to prepare you for the noon tip-off.

Live animal mascots like the Georgia Bulldog ‘UGA’ or the Texas Longhorn ‘Bevo’ are important symbols to their respective programs. I wish they still had a Wildcat to tote around campus. It turns out that live animal mascots actually generate $8.5 million more in incremental revenue for automatic qualifying schools.

Hockey jerseys are probably the coolest piece of athletic paraphernalia you can own. This Junior Hockey team’s jerseys take the freaking cake with this Star Wars-style jersey. George Lucas would approve.

Speaking of jerseys, Oregon football has unveiled their new uniforms for the 2014 season. They are just as loud and awesome as every jersey prior, as of course is tradition.

Is Vince Gill 6’10” and 400lbs, or is their coach a midget?

    You’re joking, right?
I don’t know a single person who has a hockey jersey. Actually, I don’t really know anyone who watches hockey.

Any awards for a country music song don’t mean much. A tone deaf 10 year old could write country music. It’s so bad it’s actually morphed into pop music now.

With you there Music, I wish country music would be suspended indefinitely.

For those who don’t know of Vince Gill: he has one of the best voices in any genre of music and has been recorded on the albums of many stars in many genres. He is not just ‘country’. He is also a primo guitar player & song writer. He has played at all of Eric Clapton’s guitar festivals. He performs pop, rock, blues, jazz, etc. He has recorded, singing and/or playing, with Alice Cooper, Joe Bonamassa, Barbra Steisand, Kelly Clarkson, The Blind Boys of Alabama and hundreds of others. While he is most known for his own county songs (not today’s crap!), he does not limit himself to just one genre. He is well- deserving of his 20 Grammys (more than MOST performers, not just country) and the many other awards he has received.

He is also a great humanitarian and supporter of our troops. As an item of trivia, a scholarship he funded helped pay for Brad Paisley’s education at Belmont!

In answer to one question, Vince is 6’3″ & is, as he puts it, ‘calorically challenged’, fighting a constant battle.
However, 400 lbs is beyond excessive.

As to sports, he is a great sports enthusiast, including hockey, basketball & football, both professional & college, & supports several local teams. He also plays a scratch game of golf & holds his own tournament “The Vinny” every year in the Nashville area.
