VIDEO: The dirtiest cheap shot in the history of basketball

The dirtiest move in the history of basketball occurred last night with a nasty cheap shot in a Division III game.

Kewan Platt of Fitchburg State tried to behead Nichols’ Nate Tenaglia as Tenaglia shot a three-pointer in the corner. We do not know what led Platt to put his elbow in Tanglia’s chin, but the move is inexcusable and should cost Platt his basketball career.

I’m all for forgiveness and hearing both sides of the story, but this is disgusting. Platt should be banned from any kind of basketball forever — even watching it on TV in the comfort of his own home.

I hope Tanaglia’s teammates returned the favor before Platt could get to halfcourt. That’s a bench-clearing move.

See for yourself:

For what it’s worth, the shot went in.

UPDATE: Fitchburg State suspends player, releases statement:

The school suspended the player indefinitely and barred him from campus:

The Fitchburg State community is appalled by the conduct displayed during Tuesday night’s home basketball game. The player involved has been indefinitely suspended from the team and barred from campus, effective immediately.

His behavior is antithetical to our community values and good sportsmanship. Fitchburg State does not tolerate behavior that violates those standards. The case is being reviewed at the student conduct level for consideration of further sanctions.

SEC officials would have called it an offensive foul.

I read the article and it appears the play before this he missed a 3 point shot and was upset the refs did not call a foul. Then this kid shoots a 3 and he does this. I think the kid shooting is same kid he wanted a foul against on his miss. IF there was a foul it was on the arm as he went up but can’t see from camera view. Still did not warrant this action in return. University did the right thing, hope the law does to.

That’s just plain assault. They should file charges.

I get that there’s a lot of contact that happens in basketball and tempers flare, but he just maliciously threw his forearm into the guy’s neck/face. That’s intent to injure him and was in no way part of the game. If you did that on the street or in the workplace or the classroom, you’re gonna have the cops called on you.

Agree, hope the kid and his family files charges and a lawsuit. Plus he looks back and sees the nderneath official was not looking then hits him, idiot does not even know the outside ref has that player watch. Forget ever playing basketball again, this jerk should be behind bars.

It’s kind of becoming the new “n-word”, but it is actually a very old word and originally did not have racial connotations. It was a synonym for “ruffian”. The racial connotation, ironically, may have been inspired by gang culture, namely Tupac’s use of the term “THUG LIFE”, which was an acronym. There are still a lot of older people who are honestly not aware of the racial connotations the word has now.

Given the abhorrent levels of violence in the community, including the scourge of random, unprovoked acts of violence against people of other races, it seems fitting that we have a special word for particular members of that culture.

What are we when we have lost the pioneer custom of self-defense? Civilized.

Shively, you might have a point if this game was being played on a playground somewhere. But this was an organized college basketball game on campus, with the officials and security to deal with the one individual who was way out of line. No fight necessary in this situation, and the guy who got hit was definitely down for the count.

I’m not a tough guy, and don’t pretend to be. In the time and place I was raised you didn’t allow someone to do that to you without taking up for yourself. Admittedly it would have been hard to retaliate under those circumstances. My problem is your condescending, pseudo-intellectual response. But you’ve already been exposed on that point. Suffice to say we have different views on what to do when someone punches you in the head. You sound like the type of person who would enjoy a nice pedicure and a glass of white wine.

Kat4Life Gee you’re such a tough guy. Given your emotional response I wouldn’t expect you to be able to parse out the nuances of a violent encounter and the philosophies that our society has applied to the handling of these incidents. If your solution would be to run down the court and sucker punch him back or later in the game get your shot in, you are potentially creating an escalation of violence that could lead to death and the legal liabilities that come with it. If you think the Middle East or the African American community in the US are doing well than keep your philosophy going by all means, but maybe you can learn something from this and we watch you evolve in real time.

KTR2786 If you are going to try and pass views from the guests on Joe Rogan podcast off as your own then you should at least read the book they got it from. Honor culture isn’t unique to middle eastern or African Americans nor are they the only ones who haven’t evolved beyond it.

Thomas Sowell wrote that book. Hunter Maats expanded on it. You should actually read what they say instead of speaking like an authority and misrepresenting their entire social theory.

I’m truly amazed at the historical ignorance of most Americans today, yet they’ll run to sites like this or Facebook or heaven forbid Twitter to post a comment. I’d guess 75% or more commenting have absolutely no clue about any factual information to back them up. This social media dumbing down of America is eroding not only our moral stature, but certainly dividing this nation. Ultimately it will be our demise. It’s a damn shame.

My reference to the concept came from Jonathan Haidt and maybe you should make an actual point or counterpoint. I never claimed honor culture was unique to those areas, just that they suffer objectively from its continued existence. Perhaps you should take some time to think about what you actually want to say instead of a cheap comment based on a faulty premise. You’re proving quite the intellectual.

I don’t have to rebuttal anything because you didn’t make a point. You referenced a social concept and applied it to this situation and I pointed out that your application of that concept was incorrect. You generalized about the African American and Middle Eastern communities when that theory cites a specific subset of African-Americans that were influenced. You shouldn’t generalize. Same with liberals generalizing about white mass shooters or white people in general.

I called this Neanderthal out appropriately using that concept and the communities I referenced clearly suffer from the honor culture phenomenon and I don’t need to cite my sources because I can think for myself. You are the one who applied it to all members of a particular group with your disingenuous interpretations and red herrings.
