More marquee names have joined the field for next month’s Top Seed Open in Nicholasville. Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and Coco Gauff will also play in the event, the first WTA tournament in the United States since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens were announced as participants.
Venus has seven Grand Slams to her name and will be looking for her first win of the tour year. She lost her opening round match in the Australian Open to Gauff, who burst onto the scene last year at Wimbledon as a wildcard. Azarenka, a fellow former World No. 1 player, has won the Australian Open twice.
The Top Seed Open runs August 10-17, features singles and doubles play, and offers more than $225,000 in prize money. Fans won’t be allowed in, but hopefully they can find a broadcast partner so we can watch from home.
