UPDATE: Belle’s Cocktail House will (eventually) re-open, damage “not as bad as it seems”

This morning, smoke poured into the downtown Lexington sky as Belle’s Cocktail House erupted in flames.

At first glance, things didn’t look too promising at all. The videos were rough.

Luckily for everyone involved, there were no injuries and the situation is not as bad as they originally thought.

After firefighters extinguished the fire and the dust settled a bit, co-owner Justin Thompson said the bar, though closed for the time being, will eventually reopen.

“The damage is not as bad as it seems at the moment, “ Thompson said. …“We’ll get it back open again.”

Great news.

When you look further into the details of the story, though, one aspect of it all is a bit spooky.

Apparently, Belle’s is named after 20th century Lexington madam Belle Brezing, who opened a series of brothels in the area. Her third and most famous brothel caught fire in 1895 on the third floor.

In 1973, over 30 years after Brezing’s death, her former estate on North Eastern Avenue caught fire on the third floor and burned the entire house down.

Now in 2018, it was the third floor that was destroyed by a fire at Belle’s.

It might be in their best interest to close the third floor completely. It’s cursed.
