A University of Kentucky student is missing in Tel Aviv, Israel following a swimming accident while traveling abroad.

TeNiya Elnora Jones, a 19-year-old sophomore from Ft. Myers, Florida, was swimming in the Mediterranean Sea shortly after midnight with two other individuals when the strong current pulled them out to sea. The other two managed to swim back to shore while Jones reportedly did not.

The search is ongoing.

Jones is part of a student group consisting of seven UK students and two West Virginia University students studying in a program based in Amman, Jordan this summer focused on Arabic language.

Four of the students traveled by bus from Amman to Tel Aviv for the weekend. One stayed back at the hotel while the other three went swimming.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with TeNiya, her family and the students and others impacted,” said UK President Eli Capilouto in a press release. “We are in continual contact with TeNiya’s family, officials in Israel, officials from the State Department and our Congressional delegation, to provide all the support we can for the family, students and others involved. We will do everything possible to provide whatever support is needed.”

The three students in Tel Aviv contacted Israeli officials, UK Police, the Council on International Exchange, and the families involved, where they are all working together in hopes of finding Jones. The US Embassy in Israel has also been alerted and are involved in the search, according to the official release.

Prayers to the Jones family and those involved in the tragic incident. We will keep you guys updated as the story develops.
