University of Kentucky offering “Adulting 101” classes

If you’re struggling with being an adult these days, the University of Kentucky has a class for you.

This summer, UK is offering “Adulting 101,” an online life skills course. The eight-week course is aimed at helping teenagers learn about cooking and nutrition, financial management, online safety, and roommate etiquette, but let’s be honest, we could all use a refresher on those things from time to time, especially during a pandemic. Classes will be taught by UK professors and community educators each Tuesday afternoon from June 16 to August 4. Some of the topics really speak to me on this Monday morning:

  • “Get your mind right”
  • “Due Monday or do Monday”
  • “They ain’t your momma”
  • “I wouldn’t post that”
  • “Beyond ramen”
  • “No such thing as free money”

The cost to enroll is $29.99 and, in addition to a lifetime of practical knowledge, participants will receive UK swag upon completion. For more information and to enroll, visit UKY.edu.

Sadly enough this is needed because of all the single family parenting and bad parenting that goes on. I don’t know why they don’t do this stuff in EVERY high school. I think this would help young people more than most classes taught.

Single family parenting? Do you mean single parents? Having both parents in no way means you have good parents. Often can mean the opposite because one or both of them might not want to be a parent and be “stuck” because they believe they have to be.

Han, there is always the exception to the rule. But there is no doubt that most kids do better in a 2 parent household than a single parent household. No one in their right mind is advocating that anyone should stay in an abusive relationship or anything like that.

One should not automatically compare having one parent to a pair of bad parents, or to having one bad and one good parent. Having two good parents is almost certainly better than having one good parent.

I didn’t say all single parents are bad, that’s your inference. I said AND bad parenting. Yes, studies have shown that kids in single parent homes will have more issues. However, what I was referring to is there are things a mom teaches the kids and things that a dad teache’s as a kid. My mom wouldn’t have had a clue how to teach me to teach me basic car repair. My dad would have been horrible in teaching me even basic cooking or household management. You become more well rounded from both which provide different areas of expertise.

First rule of adulting: debt is dumb. So is paying out the arse for a liberal arts degree that has almost no value in the real world… certainly not enough to provide a decent return on your investment. Bet UK doesn’t teach this in their adulting class though.

It’s a good idea. The Boomers and Gen X did a crap job teaching their kids how to do anything, so now the kids of the millennials haven’t been taught much by their own parents as a result.

Also, stuff like No Child Left Behind prioritized standardized testing memorization over actually educating.

Civics, home ec, and tech ed are all disappearing courses in public school as funding continues to get cut and the USA falls further and further behind other nations in education.

Han, for once I agree with you. Guess who mostly wrote that bill? Chappaquiddick Kennedy.

Yes, that was a Democrat bill designed to “dumb down” and standardize the curriculum only to reduce the performance gap between the high performing and low performing students.

UK probably won’t teach that, because they aren’t a “liberal arts” college. Nice try though.

Quite the little America-blaming leftist, aren’t you, Han. Perhaps a course in “American Exceptionalism” would be more appropriate for you…

Maybe they need a class in how not to be a judgmental, self-serving, hypocrite douche-bag like your Right-wing boot-licking parent.

Or maybe a class in how not to be a naive, dependent, socialist tit-sucker who requires that right-wing parent to pay your freaking way.
