2020 UK target R.J. Hampton took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce that soon he will be announcing news. I don’t love the new announcing news trend, but here we are.
The 6-foot-4, 170-pound combo guard from Texas has already taken an official visit to Memphis (somewhat rare for a junior to take officials this early) and is considered a Duke lean.
News coming Friday…

He recently said that he is still considering a jump to 2019 but it certainly seems like he’s leaning to leaving the 2020 class.
“Just being in a college program I’d be getting my body together at a higher level, I’d play against the best competition every day in practice and everything like that,” Hampton told USA Today. “It would help me out a lot in every way.”
He also mentioned how UK commit Tyrese Maxey is trying to convince him not only to join his class, but join him at his future college in Lexington. The Maxey and Hampton backcourt would give UK another Texas backcourt like the Cats had with the Harrison twins from 2013-2015.
Calipari has recruited Texas as well as any other state since taking over UK’s program in 2009. Kentucky as a program has landed eight players from the Lone State State and six have signed with John Calipari (Jeff Brassow and Bob Burrow are the two exceptions. BRASSSSSOW).
However, UK hasn’t offered Hampton. Calipari generally doesn’t offer players early, but has extended two in the class of 2020, Scottie Barnes and N’Faly Dante. It’s assumed Hampton will eventually land an offer from the Cats, but if he does announce a jump to the class of 2019 on Friday then the Cats better hurry.
