UK Softball’s Vengeful Comeback Ties Series Against Tennessee

What a difference a night makes, as the Kentucky Wildcats Softball team (27-5, 4-4) turns around to defeat the Tennessee Lady Volunteers (27-6, 3-5) 13-2, tying the series at 1-1. Looking to win their first-ever series in Knoxville, the Wildcats had little problems against UT, getting an early lead in a record-setting night after two home runs by freshmen Erin Coffel.

Coffel, who is already up to 14 home runs, is having one of the best seasons ever, almost hitting a third home run at the top of the fourth inning. Getting started early, Tennessee was forced to look towards the bullpen very quickly, but all pitchers ended up giving up a home run. This is the second time this season the Wildcats have hit four home runs in a game, and a home run by Rylea Smith forced Tennessee to go back to their starter Samantha Bender for the fourth inning.

For Tennessee, senior outfielder Amanda Ayala could not replicate the night she had before, only being walked once in her two plate appearances. Third baseman Chelsea Seggern was the only bright spot for the Lady Volunteers, going 2-3 with an RBI.

Grace Baalman, after pitching a complete game, is now 6-1 on the season after a dominant performance that included five strikeouts and only five hits, compared to the 13 given up by the Lady Volunteer pitchers.

A pair of singles by Smith and Coffel in the fifth increased Kentucky’s lead to 11, helping Coffel tie her own school record with six RBIs. Kentucky showed why they are the SEC’s best batting team, totaling four home runs to go along with 13 hits and RBIs.

The second game seemed like a complete switch, as Kentucky flourished and Tennessee struggled. The Wildcats now look to finish off the road trip and capture their first series victory in Knoxville tomorrow. The game is set to air on ESPNU, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
