The Kentucky softball team entered the seventh and final inning with a 5-2 lead, three outs away from forcing a decisive game three at Oregon in the Super Regionals. They left the seventh inning on the ring side of the acoreboard.
Oregon scored four runs on four hits in the top half of the inning to end the Wildcats’ season with a 6-5 loss.
Kentucky scored early with two runs in the first inning. Abby Cheek’s homerun in the bottom of the fourth gave the Cats’ all the momentum, but it would not last.
Oregon got on the board in the top of the fifth when Meagan Prince was called for an illegal pitch with the bases loaded. It was the first of many questionable calls from behind home plate. UK Twitter nearly imploded in the seventh when the strike zone got tighter, and tighter, and tighter, until Oregon took the lead.
Despite the tough loss, Coach Lawson’s team deserves to be commended for another excellent season (39-19), one that ended just short of the program’s second College World Series appearance.
